  • Record shop owners logic.

Yesterday I was in "Narch", having a leisurely trawl through the vinyl emporia (you guys up that way are spoilt for choice). Went into one shop, the owner was chatting to a punter. I'm the only other person in the shop. The usually large 45s section was covered in large cardboard boxes full of records. I'm standing in front of them trying to get a glimpse of the 45s underneath. The owner tells me he has had so much stuff "in" that he has nowhere else to put the boxes. I ask if I can have a look at the 45s. He tells me he will have to move the boxes. I don't answer, I just hold his gaze.....he comes back with "What if someone comes in and they want to look at the albums?"
I left, empty handed, but mildly amused it has to be said.

I absolutely hate that logic. You find it othet fields as well. It's both insulting and lame. What if nobody ever comes in??

after reading that i realise how blessed i am to have my local 2nd hand shop.

              where do i start?

cups of tea, a smile, friendly chat, allowed to move anything i want, text alerts when stuff comes in and prices way lower than any 2nd hand shop i've been to.

suffice to say he does a roaring trade.

I once got forcibly ejected from a shop in Berlin for daring to look through more than one category. Apparently there is something fearfully unnatural about liking jazz AND rock.

it's OK to head out for wonderful, but on your way to wonderful, you're gonna have to pass through all right. When you get to all right,
take a good look around and get used to it, because that may be as far as you're gonna go.

Had a chat with him last time I was up there, and he was really helpful, and I was the punter at the counter that time. He needs a bigger shop.

Amongst retailers the record shop owner, along with the bookshop proprietor, must be the most cantankerous or, to be kind, eccentric.
I worked with one guy who couldn't even serve in his own shop - he used to get so wound up by the customers.
Another chap I worked for specialised in dry abuse which sometimes descended into explosive incandescence.

Not to excuse this type of behaviour - it's unacceptable.

I was brought into one shop as a 'breath of fresh air' to be 'nice to the customers'.
I'm a pretty easy-going guy - but after a year or two I was snapping at people I'm ashamed to say.
