Could it be Johnny Almond, UK jazz saxophonist working with US saxophonist Curtis Amy? Amy appeared on the second Johnny Almond Music Machine album 'Hollywood Blues' and you can hear them on this track, 'Agadir Sunset' (Almond's on vibes...)
Problem is that this was released in 1970, so if it's a cover of the William DeVaughan classic it would have to be from '74 or later, but since Almond lived in San Francisco and Amy was also west coast based, further collaborations mightn't have been out of the question?
