  • Head Warrington Shutting Down

Was in Warrington on Saturday and they had huge closing down posters in the window. The shop shuts on the 5th of September as apparently they have lost the lease to HMV which is kind of weird as they are in the same building HMV occupied previously before they started shutting down all their shops. Quite sad as I always find something to buy when I pop in and annoying that the shopping centre would rather have HMV than a true independent retailer in there.

They have a few other stores so I doubt they will start marking down all the vinyl to giveaway prices but worth keeping an eye on. At the moment they have racks and racks of discounted and damaged cd's at buy 1 get 2 free and as most are a quid its basically 3cd's for a pound. I picked up a few including a reissue of 'Studio G Abstracts' 'Ninja Cuts - You Don't Know (ninja tune 3 cd box) and some bits of 90's techno amongst other things. Worth a browse.

The day was scuppered a bit when I returned home and on pulling left into my drive was hit in my passenger side at about 40-50 mile an hour by a car that came out of nowhere behind me.

My wife took the full brunt being in the passenger side, a couple of inches to the left and it might have been much worse or could have had kids in the back, pretty bizarre all in all. Good thing though in the last couple of hours his insurance has rang and is taking full liability.

To cut a long story short the lease Head signed said that HMV could take the premises back. A take it or leave it situation. Isn't capitalism wonderful.

          Hi Amidar

It is correct that HMV put a higher bid in than (Head) to get the lease,When Hmv shut down a lot of their stores there were a few that were border line and this was one of them.
I am glad you found Head an enjoyable place to shop it is what we strive for whether you are a muso or a casual buyer.

Glad you and your wife are ok after the car incident.

          thanks

          Geoff

            Hi Ant

Don't want to get into specifics but your statement is not correct.

            thanks

I blame the Warrington Guardian online, you can't trust anyone!

Which begs the question why don't Head stay then, its a wonderful shop & HMV is anything but!!!!

                Hi Ant

Well we should all know by now about what we read in the papers/on line is not always the truth (and I include my self in that).
Our rent deal had run out and HMV put in a higher bid as simple as that I am afraid.
thanks for the positive comment on the shop.

                Thanks

                Geoff

Thanks Geoff its a nice place to shop with a varied selection and fairly priced. I very much doubt HMV will offer a better experience.

                    Hi Geoff

It's such a shame, i'll really miss Head and the superbly priced Blues/Jazz/Soul albums i was happily buying :-)
What you did in Warrington was truly superb and admirable.

                      Hi Ant

Thank you for the very kind words, I will pass these on to the staff at Warrington and the owner, when you receive such positive comments, from customers it makes the hard work worth it (believe me it is hard work) but I love my job.

We are all really gutted to see the shop close, and the staff lose their jobs, I know a few of the staff have applied to HMV for jobs and if they have any sense HMV will employ the m as we had a great team in the shop who were passionate about music and film.

                      thanks and regards

                      Geoff

The way that HMV seemed to have come crawling back into towns just seems really unfair. They get preferential credit terms from distributors meaning that they have loads of the stock that the indies have to pay for in advance, titles that the indies could sell hand over fist but can't obtain as HMV (and Amazon) have all the stock (which they are able to pay for when it sells).

Stinks really, 'Head' prove they can make it work again in Warrington and HMV (or 'Hilco Capital') just steamroller back in.
