  • Max Richters Eight Hour Lullaby.

Stumbled across this last night on R3. The longest single piece of music ever broadcast by the BBC. Well I managed three and half hours! 2am - 0530am.
It was awesome. An experience! Merging chamber music operatic arias etc with deep deep bass bin shaking electronics .Marvellous.
No I didn't wake up in time for todays record fair.
Did wake up in time for the Boro v Leeds game though..unfortunately.

Cheers for the heads up, I almost bought his most recent on vinyl the other day but plumped for the new Beirut album instead.

I drifted in and out through the whole piece.

I interviewed him for a reviews site I write for – he's a charming and very helpful interviewee. Going to get the LP for sure, And try to repeat the exercise this weekend with the long piece.

I bought the album today and remembered I'd linked to quite an interesting article from here which was a good insight into the man. Just realised I never said thank you, so thanks jah.

The album well I was shattered and managed to get to side C and actually dreamed I'd got up and flipped it over on to side D. If your'e like me and listen to a lot of ambient music to help get to sleep its pretty much essential. I uhhmmdd and ahhdddd a bit I'm glad I took the plunge and went for quality over quantity cos its sublime.

I'll have to find a rip of the 8 hour version for sure.

That may be true, but he's not the first to create a piece like that (not saying that you are claiming otherwise). Pitchfork wrote a good article on that, with some great examples: http://pitchfork.com/features/articl...f-sleep-music/

I've been a bit obsessed with music and sleep for a long time. I think it started with 'The KLF - Chill Out' then through various ambient albums. I'm a big proponent of no drums in lets call it 'Sleep Music' well certainly only mild drumming or sweet sounding minimal percussion a la tabla etc. SOMA FM do two internet stations 'Drone Zone' and 'Deep Space One' which are great if you have an ipod or smart tv with an internet radio app on it I prefer the former but the Drone one does exactly what it states. Matt Berry's recent 'Music for Insomniacs' I thought was great but a perennial favourite is 'Prefuse 73 - Sleeping On A Saturday and Sunday Afternoons' I think it was released under his real name at gigs so not an offical release, an extract:

As for the 'Max Richter' could be his best work to date but just my opinion. Nice to have it on vinyl but I think in this case I will be using the download coupon I hope its in FLAC.
