  • Synth question

I'm looking to buy a cheap synthesizer that can perform cosmic whooshing sounds ala Hawkwind etc.

    Any help gratefully received.

Search for the Korg Monotron Delay for cheap cosmic kicks ( under £40) or get an iPad and the Synthi emulator app for a version of what Hawkwind originally used ( original Putney might cost you up to £10.000)

          Fab!

I like the way he'll throw in the strong steel table for free...

Don't think I've ever seen one so Mint, sad thing is someone like Coldplay will probably buy it and use it on their next album.

In answer to the question 'Monotron' will let you make ms10 like sweeps for pennies and the Ipad idea is just as cool if not better.

This has been causing ripples in the synth collectors' pool for a few weeks.

                It's a proper pig in a poke.

It doesn't work, and no one knows precisely how much more sorting it needs - Even the seller.

I can well imagine, do you have any knowledge or indeed any links to discussion of its history?

Servicing an old mini-moog is expensive enough could become a money pit, who cares though its awesome! Someone needs to bring it back to life

The conclusion of the two biggest synth heads I know is...

Unless you have incurable GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) or deep enough pockets to fix this up as an 'investment', then it's best left alone. Does that sound like synth envy?
Don't see them that often. If I remember, will see if they know more about it?

Depends on your definition of cheap, but the Arturia Minibrute is a joy to play with and is ludicrously cheap for a fully featured end to end analogue monosynth. Can be had for £200-£250 second hand and they are plentiful. The Microbrute is cheaper but I can't be doing with the minikeys

...if in doubt consult your dealer.

                        Off topic but Hawkwind related.

A few days ago my wife was telling my daughter and me about a work colleague whose partner plays in a band. What's their name? we asked. My wife couldn't remember but said it something like Hawkwind. Quick as a flash my daughter said "Eaglefart?" bmm bmm!

Another off topic but doesn't the name 'Hawkwind' come from 'Hawk' to be sick and 'wind' as in y'know 'wind' from the bottom or is that an urban myth?

Sure I've read interviews that one of their many intentions especially in the early days was to make people vomit what with all the 2 beats, heavy riffing and burbling synths alongside Nik Turner and Robert Calvert's crazed and intense ramblings.

I like 'Hawkwind' I don't buy the 'status quo with synths' stuff some throw at them and I loved some of their 90's stuff ('It's the Business of the Future is to be Dangerous' is a really cool and forward thinking album for the time and 'Alan Davey' was like 'Lemmy' on steroids mixed with speed around then, really clever as a 3 piece for a time.) as much as their 70's peak. They've done lots of great, some good, some average, few poor and downright shite albums but I can never forgive them for letting uber fan 'Matthew Wright' sing on 'Spirit of the Age' on one of their recent works and I've seen a haggard and wasted 'Sam Fox' sing 'Silver Machine' with them on stage as 'Lemmy' looked on non-plussed.

Great doc, I was at that gig that Lemmy said was a shambles, he wasn't far wrong although it was fun, Nik Turner was great. Although saying that there was an angry air in the audience that night it was so packed. Maybe I upset Hawkwind fans at gigs, I was shitfaced that night and I do have a history of it I suppose, dunno why.

Been to quite a few Hawkwind gigs albeit in the 90's and early 2000's and I never got a peace and love vibe once.

Quite sad how they've all fallen out with each other over the years.
