  • 1980's Guilty Pleasure

Following on from the resurrected 70's thread thought I'd start an eighties one. Yep I hate the 'Guilty Pleasure' tag it makes no sense if you like it, its good but anyway. Was so tempted to put this on this years Xmas mix but another from the same album will fit better. Cant get enough of it, perfect pop song don't know how it didn't chart higher. I do think it was recorded in 79 but released in 1980 so that makes it eighties for me.

Hands up! I was guilty of having lots of pleasure in the '80s.
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

My default position used to be most everything up until 1986-7 was absolute pants (and I hated the decade with a passion) and even then the majority off 88-89 was just as bad. As of lately I've been reassessing a lot of 80's music and changing my mind on loads of it.

I remember a debate in the media, I must have been 12-14 maybe younger where the newspapers and media in general were convinced they had run out of songs as lots of covers were topping the charts eg: 'Spirit in the Sky', Kylie's locomotion etc. Anyone remember that?

Another one as when they showed the video on 'Tiswas' circa 1983 it got etched into my brain. Do I like it? I dunno but it earwormed me in one listen so I tracked down years later didn't know the band but I knew the video involved a paint fight and it was called 'Freeze Frame'.

I recently found Love is a battlefield to be really good. I had it on repeat for days.
I grew up through the 80s, I thought it was the worst music / fashion time ever. but im starting to look back and find bits I like.

obviously hip hop isn't counted in with the other 80s junk

Good point re: hip hop and probably the early murmurings of electronica too.

Good to hear "Rush Hour" again. Why not a bigger hit?

I grew up in Essex, in the 80s. This is my national anthem. I genuinely love this record to bits, not guilty in the slightest.

I´ve spent long hours trying to decide which of Shalamar's 1982 quartet of singles is the best, but have accepted that Friends. There It Is, I Can Make You Feel Good and Night to Remember cannot be ranked comparitively in any meaningful way.

This 1981 miss was the launching pad for a year of peak pop perfection. In 1983 they released Dead Giveaway and Margaret Thatcher was re-elected
