  • Combo jack audacity question!

Hi folks looking for some help if possible

I used to record stuff straight out of the back of my amp into the mic input and using audacity. This was grand until my old laptop gave up the ghost and had to be replaced earlier in the year. I'm now looking to do some more recording but this new laptop has a combo jack for headphones and mic and whenever I plug the same lead in nothing happens and it doesn't recognise it if you get me?

I'm technologically challenged at the best of times.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give

You will need a USB external soundcard.

Combo Jack Audacity would be a great name for a band ... especially if they were French

        Sounds Japanese to me.

Also I was thinking of the Aunty Jack LPs that I occasionally see here, and studiously avoid.

you should never use the mic input on a laptop to record from a line out signal, its expecting a microphone and will add gain to the signal and will overload the signal which will deteriorate and cause distortion to the sound quality and at worst damage your laptop

Plenty of dicsussion around this topic elsewhere in this forum on the later pages of this thread :
"After proposing a 2015 VG+ CD Swap, he was amazed by what happened next!"

For an example a basic Behringer would do the trick: line out amp > Behringer > USB on laptop

I am also thinking "Combo Jack Audacity" or just "Combo Jack" would be a great name for a band

I have a Mac Mini with a combo mic/line in jack, that gives OK results when I connect with the line out from my amp. Then again, that's a separate input jack, as I have a combo analog/digital output jack as well.

I think the Macbook has a combo in/out jack that should accept a line in signal with acceptable results. You would probably need to do a switch input/output in the Sound setting panel.
