  • Vintage Portable Turntable

I saw this lovely pocket-sized battery-operated portable turntable recently. Not for sale, alas, for display purposes only. It's housed in a silk-lined leather case with a strap and a metal clasp, and is quite heavy. Like an old camera. It plays 7inch records only (its about 5-6 inches wide). There's a 33/45 switch, a speed adjustment dial and a volume dial. I tried it out and it worked reasonably well though the volume was very low. Perhaps it needed new batteries. I could see no headphone jack. There is a panel in the base but I didn't open it.

No sign of a brand name.

    Anyone know more about it?

I don't know, looks a dinky little thing and probably cheaply made for the time. I asked my dad and he didn't recognise it and he's usually pretty good with things like this. The case looks like the one my gran used to keep a little mini chess set in. A nice thing all the same and would be interested to know its origins am guessing maybe Japan as a wild guess. Maybe the star like logo on the end of the arm means something to someone.

I'm pretty sure it's Japanese alright, though I can't remember how I deduced that at the time.
AFAIR there were no identifying marks on it anywhere, including the battery compartment.

These operating instructions were found in the sleeve of a recent charity shop purchase - a similar portable but this time with an added radio - again, no brand name but the instructions were printed in Japan - any ideas?

        EDIT - ah....if I'd bothered to do 2 minutes research before I asked - it's a Barrington....

        Cool....I want one...
