  • Xmas pressies thread

Someone tell me a really killer female vocalist LP I can get my gf for Xmas. She loves French stuff, she would also dig old soul and R&B, and is a former riot grrrl so fond of punky shouting. Any thoughts? She's not fussed about OGs (I know, I know - I'm so embarassed) but it's gotta to be source-able, on vinyl by Xmas. I'd give new stuff an airing also.

    Any thoughts?

Thought this thread could spin off into other requests for other significant other Xmas pressies.

Chin-Chin, Sound a Of a The Westway. Swiss girl punk jangly power pop amazingness.

Definitely a desert island disc of mine, the the fact the original is under €50 and always available when I look amazes me. That said, they're not giving them away so the Mississippi Records re-ish is there under 20, albeit with a worse cover. There are good liner notes though which is always nice as I'd never heard of them before. There are too many good tracks to pick for one post, I find the whole lp consistently great. Just read the story on Discogs (- the same as the liner notes, I think), buy the record, listen to the videos on YouTube.

For some reason the 7" didn't get me going anywhere near the same as the lp.

Anything by Lois Maffeo would be good for the mature riot grrrl

Good work people. Thanks and keep 'em coming. I'm going to work through the recommendations now.
Hayes: I have that Chin-Chin reissue from a few years back, it's great isn't it? Would be remiss to give her something I already own though....

Trying to think outside the box...

Reissue of Lizzy Mercier Descloux's "Press Colour" on Light in the Attic? Nothing says "commitment" like double vinyl.

That´s the first thing I thought of, but the 2003 Ze issue looked a bit pricy.

Lights In The Attic have been doing Lizzy Mercier recently. Though they can be pretty pricy.

Of the French 60s ye ye girls Stella has a rep as being pretty anti-cute though if you don't speak French it may be possible to see her as in the same bag as Francoise Hardy etc. Ditto Clothilde. Ace have done three comps of French girls, two of Japanese and one of Italian (pretty torch-y). Rather than do double vinyl they do single discs with half the number of tracks as CD annoyingly. They also did an lp by Pussycat but I can't recommend that as I'm not familiar with it.
Enthusiastic vagueness passes for scholarship in the twilight world of the disc-jockey.

Cheers guys - I have Press Colour as well. This thread is saving me money so far. I don't know how well it bodes for the future of the relationship though.

Destroy All Monsters and some kinda Frechh girls comp are strong contenders so far.

It only occurred to me afterwards that you or she might already have it, doh. I see some fine other suggestions here so you wont be empty handed.
