  • Actual jazz mags, with vinyl!

I just popped down the local PO to send a few records off to various lucky recipients, when I noticed what looked like a Miles Davis lp nestling amongst the comics. And it was! Kind Of Blue on vinyl, for £4.99.

Records in the newsagents, it's like 1974 all over again.

Saw the tail end of an ad on telly last night for it. Saw another ad from the same company today. Star Wars helmets with a mag!!

What else do we need that could be packaged with a handy magazine?
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

I always remember seeing a Henry Cow album in the racks of The Kabin in Coronation Street. Can't remember when - 1980s I think*

      * Off-thread tangent. Apologies

I was just watching American Pickers and an ad came on in the break for this mag. Very brief though, I missed the detail. Always watch ads with the sound down so didn't really catch the drift. Presumably the first issue is a loss-leader and the reat are pricey. Maybe all the music is out of copyright too?

These guys have been at it for years they release issue 1 at a cheap price then further issues are 10-20 quid each. When the run is over a few years later they release the same mag all over again.

Sometimes it involves building something (a piece per mag) other times its collectible figures. I know one thing they are worth sod all on the second hand market I came into a collection of medieval figures by them, quite a lot of them in mint condition, think they went for 15 quid.

I don't have 'Kind of Blue' on vinyl one of those etched into your brain albums but if its legit 180g I'd pay 4.99 for it if I saw it.

Subscribe, and you get all the collection at £15 a pop, and a t-shirt, a zippo lighter (?), and a set of brushes for keeping your vinyls clean. And a discount on a £200 turntable, as the people buying these probably don't have one.

Mind you, I did get it cos it was £4.99. I'll give it a spin later and check it ahhhht. Or just sell it on discogs for £20.

Yep, I said it to the wife this morning 'Just popping into town to buy a Jazz mag' which I duly did. You also get a poster of the 'Cotton Club' score!

It was well hidden and I couldn't find it when I first went in so went off to another newsagent and tried my luck on the way back. There was another guy at least two decades older than me looking or it and it turned out it was hidden behind the mother and baby magazines so it pays to ask. He was quite a rude gentleman who started giving grief to a complete stranger in front of him in the line. Giving jazzers a bad name I say. I used the self-serve of which I offered him first dibs but he refused.

I shall not be buying anymore they tend to dissapear off the racks after issue one lures you in and "It goes up to 25 quid" so the grumpy gent said just glad it started with an album I don't have on vinyl despite probably knowing it mostly note for note in my mind palace!

EDIT: Had a look and it goes up to 9.99 next week, another 'special price' and its Coltrane's 'Blue Train'. I also saw the 'Star Wars' ones a build dinosaurs one an issue on how to draw Marvel characters with a pad and some pencils if there are any Star Wars, Dinosaur, Comic Drawing fans on here.

Why Kind Of Blue? surely everyone's got it anyway?

If they were doing Grachan Moncur III's Aco Dei de Madrugada for a fiver I'd be down the newsagent like a shot.

Just seen this has been listed on Discogs. It mentions in the notes on that page "Wynton Kelly is credited as Winton Kelly on the front cover". Is there any relevance to this or is it a typo?. G

Typo it seems makes you wonder how they recreated the cover. Bought issue 2 in Sainburys today its gone up to a tenner but a fool and his money and all that, could probably buy a 'Dol' reissue from Juno for cheaper and have it delivered but it was there and I don't have it at least not on vinyl, sounds good though.

EDIT: Its John Coltrane - Blue Train this week goes up to 15 quid next week and probably wont be in the shops.

I got the first issue, seemed pretty surreal to be buying a vinyl from sainsburys
