  • Maurice White R.I.P

What a blow. Just heard this news on the World Service. G

Elephant and dwarf they call them, Pepe Kalle and his little
    stage dancing friend Emoro.

Gutted when I heard this last night, tightest band the world has ever seen and likely to in their prime. Sad News, loved them and always will. RIP Maurice.

Their early Lps are an eclectic blend of styles and arrangements, and even the big sellers are superb productions with memorable songs. Even for those not into funk, it's hard to dislike the grooves of 'fantasy' and 'september'!

One of my favourite tracks featuring MW:
"THIS IS A FINE TAPE AND BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF YESTERYEAR WHEN THE MUSIC WORLD WAS GOOD AND NOT FOULED UP BY THE LONG HAIR SCURVES WHO JUST BEAT WILDLY ON ANYTHING AND COME UP WITH A LOT OF STUPID NOISE THat only damnfools and liars say they like it"

Just heard a guy on the radio after they played some 'EW&F' say not his kind of thing he was 'into Hip Hop and R&B' irony much...

I could pick anything but I'll choose this as I've danced like a prat to it on my own many a time:

I fucking love Maurice White. Spiritual jazz, gospel, Brazil, latin, hard funk, thumb pianos, spaceships, flying guitarists, ancient Egypt, everything.

A brilliant, generous musican who brought his vision to perfect reality.

          Vardy.....¡¡¡PELIGRO!!!

Exactly what BC said and that's also the clip I was going to post.

                    Talented man - sad loss.

                      Yes, great album LDJB.

I loved the drumming he did while at Chess more than anything though. Here's the first appearance of that thumb piano...

And his drumming on this is SUPERB:

Anyone know if Maurice is the "Reese" that fellow Chicagoans the Art Ensemble were referring to on Reese and the Smooth Ones?

There definitely seem to have been links between Maurice and the AACM.

I used to sneakily play my sisters copy of 'I Am' when she wasn't looking along with Can and PIL - another great talent gone. As Ian has said his drumming is all over Charles Stepney productions. Fantastic sound

                          Back to Neuuuuuuuuuu!
