  • BE Jazz // Bootlegger

I hope it's OK to post this...

Please don't buy the BE Jazz bootleg of Carsten Meinert Kvartet "To You". Frederiksberg Records made a remastered version from the original tapes and we've paid mechanicals as well as master rights. BE Jazz has done none of that and has no permission to release this title. Straight pirate bootleg! Shame on you Micha Gottschalk of BE Jazz.

Concerning the Barney Wilen "Zodiac" release by BE Jazz, Patrick Wilen - son of Barney, wrote on his Facebook page:

    https://www.facebook.com/barneywilen/?fref=ts

"This bootleg of "Zodiac" came out under the label "BE! JAZZ". Don't buy it.
Thank you in advance for being loyal customers and respecting the rights of musicians and their heirs.
    - Patrick Wilen"

    Please don't support the bootleggers!

I thought BE Jazz is a bit shady sometimes but not an out and out bootlegger... shame.. I have some of their releases and they look and sound reasonably good. Fyiw I have their reissue of Christian Schwindt Quintet ‎"For Friends And Relatives" but also bought the much superior Frederiksberg reissue. I will try to avoid their releases in the future.

Back in May 2015, BE Jazz announced a "re-issue" (read 100% bootleg) of Carsten Meinert Kvartet "To You". At that point, I had been working exclusively with Meinert for about two years to get every detail right. The information that my label, Frederiksberg Records, was doing a fully licensed re-issue was already out there. A quick online search would have revealed that. I contacted Micha Gottschalk of BE Jazz who had made absolutely zero effort to contact Meinert nor myself about his bootleg release. Anyways, Micha promised to stop everything in relation with Meinert.

      What did he do?

He went ahead and made it anyway.

To me, Micha Gottschalk a thief and a liar.

Dresso, is there a way for people to tell the diff between a legit and a bootleg? Maybe some can't tell the diff?

The bootleg cd of To You doesn't say Frederiksberg Records. It doesn't include the 4 bonus tracks, there's no booklet with unpublished photos. It has terrible sound and wasn't remastered from the original 1/4" master tapes which we had access to. Overall it's just really poorly executed.

So according to this forum and discogs comments Be!Jazz is bootleg operation and Funky Planet, Fifth Dimension and Far Eastern Sunshine are bootleg operations.

It appears that these are now everywhere. I was browsing some new jazz releases at HHV site and about 70% of the new releases were bootlegs/unofficial releases. So maybe we should start asking what rare jazz reissues can we buy.

            How about these?

Well I'm guessing the Adele Sebastian is a boot as Nimbus West plan to reissue it as they have done with Hassans Walk and some others on their label

The Katsuhisa Hattori originates in Germany, as far as I'm aware. Given the flood of legit and well-produced, though expensive, reissues coming out of Japan these days I would very much doubt that it is kosher.

Would be happy to be proved wrong, though.

Out of interest; why bootleg records that are about to be legitimately reissued by other labels?

Are they expecting to benefit from the publicity around legit reissues, or is it just a question of getting in there first?

There are tons of other records they could do without risking the inevitable animosity and bad blood that comes from undermining someone else's hard work.

Usually bootlegs won't have any licensing details printed on the jacket, but more importantly they won't have any contact details. Any legitimate record company will have a name, email, website etc where they can be contacted. Bootleg labels obviously want to remain secret, so there won't be any contact info at all.

They also tend not to have any liner notes or other extras that require a bit more work other than just making a reproduction of a record that's already been released.

Speaking of BE Jazz, is this really legit?

I was under the impression Jazzman is about to reissue that album.

I wouldn't touch it, it can't be legit. Far better waiting for the Jazzman reissue

Be Records has agreed not to release the Tatum album. If anyone finds this not to be the case, please let me know

The Jazzman reissue will include liner notes by Francis Gooding following his interview with Mr Tatum. It's high quality, fully authorised and will be out in April. The CD version will also have the 'Live' album included.

Oh and it's a fantastic record BTW, such a good listen all the way through, it will send shivers down your spine

I'm confused about how legit these Painted Dog reissues are. I bought this one last year:

                              http://www.painteddogrecords.com/dadisi_komolafe.html

but now I see it's coming out again:

Are they both official? Is this possible?
