            What's the prize this time?
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

Presumably, McCartney was told about it before it was advertised as an item in the upcoming auction. I think the auction house could have put him in touch with the vendor (assuming he didn;t have Paul's number anyway) and broker a deal. They are licensed to do that. They take commission as normal.
That way, it goes to the one person who has a personal connection to it and who really should own it, It will be safe for the world to see in the future because he is wealthy enough to have them in a secure environment like strong safes, temp controlled rooms etc.. and he is accessible as is his family when he passes on, unlike if it goes to a museum or to some relatively unknown collector from anywhere in the world. It would be a shame to have this in UK for 50 years and then it goes to some war-torn country or tin-pot/communist cocuntry where it;s security can be compromised etc... and then there is mystery about what happened to it and who it got sold on to, if that happens. Paul would never sell it if he owned it. I believe he bought a 1st colour issue of Dark some years ago. I imagine he would have many more huge rarities and he can add this acetate to his collection. I think that's a good idea.

I wonder what happened to the Beatles Cavern reel to reel that failed to turn up in the Partridge Auction a few months ago after a lot of press? Macca get that?

I;m not 100% sure all these high priced records will keep their value when I encounter things like today. A 20-30 year old customer came up to me and said she was "looking for records by a guitarist but couldn;t remember his name....ummm, he wrote Voodoo Child." I said, "Jimi Hendrix?"
                      She said "Yes! that's him."
I was fairly stunned but kept a lid on commenting.
I've had customers come to me who had not heard of The Beatles. I wonder if people who spend $100,000 to $1M for example, on a record, actually work at the coalface (record retail) like me and see first hand the lack of knowledge or care that kids have about this era and the records. There are plenty that do. That;s true...but plenty that don;t and that would put some uncertainty in my mind if I was spending huge sums of money on records because I would think that maybe nobody will care enough to pay more for them in future. Everyone seems so sure that they will go up in value but that's economics, to some degree and economists can be wrong.

There are some very wealthy people in the world. There's bankers who get multi-million pound bonuses every year. If I was a banker with a multi-million pound bonus and I also liked the Beatles I would bid a million quid without even batting an eyelid...

I suppose my thinking is because he owns the 'Quarrymen' acetate but that might have more personal value to him. I watched a documentary not so long back and he had a fully working Mellotron and the actual double bass that was used on 'Hound Dog' by 'Elvis' among other great musical toys. The Mellotron no doubt had some heritage attached to it but I cant remember if they went into it on the show.

Well, yes, I would think so too but having said that, this would also be of a personal value to him. All of these late 50's/early 60's 78rpm and acetates and reel to reels of The Beatles in various incarnations would be of interest to him, I assume. The other example I know of is the reel-to-reel tape-recording as described on the Wkipedia page:

".....made by an audience member on 6 July 1957, during the Quarrymen's last set for the 1957 Rose Queen garden fête at St. Peter's Church, Woolton, Liverpool. This was made on the very day on which McCartney first met Lennon, but before he was a member of the group. So, while it is true that an audience member made a recording that night, the recording was not under the band's control, and it was made before McCartney, Harrison or Starr joined the band."

I don;t know who owns that but I would just offer it to Paul directly if I was the owner, but that's just me.

I doubt that anyone in the world would be as hard a "hitter" as Paul in an auction house for Beatles items he wants. Imagine seeing him walk into the room or knowing, that guy in the suit will be bidding for him! I would get cold shivers, thinking about the potential hole in my bank account, if I was going to be bidding on the same item(s).

Also, if people in the room knew Paul was bidding and I was bidding against him, I would be worried that people in the room would hate me for bidding against a former-Beatle. The whole scenario seems like some sort of pseudo-blasphemy.

I'm not a fab four fan but knowing how reel to reel tapes deteriorate I'd have got rid years ago if it indeed does exist. Interesting trivia though.

I know a bit about auctions but no so much about sales offering super high value items. That he's a-multi millionaire with an association to the item he will have been made aware I'm sure like yourself on that.

I'd love to see him do his 'thumbs up' in the room but I would say either him or someone else will be on the end of a phone and the auctioneer will be made well aware which one. Their valuation is no indication of what it will go for which to be fair they admit its one of those things you cant put even a ball-park figure on. My guess as I posted is over a million, it needs properly cleaning by experts and recording at a pro studio. It will no doubt turn up on some obscenely expensive box set in the future.

I once had an argument because I dared criticise his performance at the UK Olympics opening ceremony. I say argument it ended with this guy saying 'He's a genius END OF'. Personally I find him a Parody of his former self but its all opinions there's no 'end of'. Was mildly amusing he was fuming in his support for Paul's Olympic performance and it wasn't as if I called it 'shit' or anything from memory I just said it was 'a bit sloppy'. Some Beatles fans can get rather passionate.
