  • George Martin RIP

Just died age 90. Really sad news. We all know the score with George, and his impact on popular music. Three cheers for George Martin. What a fine chap.

    My favourite GM tune.

Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

What Treeboy said! A proper gent and so quietly influential.

I used to use 'Theme One' as my 'guest set' opener for ages. The original LP it is on is great too.

It's a big 'hurrah!' for Sir George from Chicken Towers......always loved his work on Stackridge's 'Man In The Bowler Hat' and the score he provides on this piece is staggeringly underrated.......

you can hear colours when they rhyme...

Respect to George! RIP good Sir.

His body isn't yet cold and the 45 I had of his on Discogs sold before 8am this morning... is there a (polite) word for people who cash in on newly deceased icons?

It gets worse - I keep remembering things he was involved in beyond the fabs.

Going to open all the windows and fill the sky up with some unashamedly romantic GM loveliness.

Been thinking about this all day at work.

He was an amazing producer especially with orchestras the sound on this heard properly and not via YouTube is lush listen from about 7:09:

The video does it no justice (crap sound) but I remember being blown away by it when I fist heard it. Possibly my first proper exposure to classical music albeit mixed with jazz.

I don't know if he'd have found this funny but Kevin Eldon had him down to a tee:

                        RIP George, I salute you!

We've had a copy of "Off the Beatle track" on the wall in the shop for about 6 months. In fact the other week I dropped the price to shift it on. Guess what went straight away yesterday morning (albeit online)? Really weird to say the least.

Sir George had a hand in some of the very finest comedy records ever made. All those daft sound effects, improvised instruments, overdubs, tape loops, massed orchestras playing strange notes, and things played backwards that made the Beatles famous for their radical inventiveness were first put to use making recording stars of the likes of Joan Sims, Terry Scott, Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Rolf Harris, Bernard Cribbins, Lance Percival etc etc.
