  • cheap, but not rubbish record player needed

rather than divert a different thread away from the topic, I thought I would start a new one.

I recently moved, this new house is a totally different layout to the old one, so im in need of a decent ish record player for the living room. im not after top end. just something that wont ruin the records and that I can plug into the soundbar. any suggestions?

Second hand shops, Pawn Shops, Ebay are your best bet, get one of those duals or an old Trio, Sony or something. Don't Richer Sounds sell a cheap Sony and are they any good?

Don't know if they are any good but here: http://www.richersounds.com/product/...0/sony-pslx300

Sign up to their newsletter get another 10% off with a voucher and if someone is selling it cheaper elsewhere ie: superfi or someone get a price match and your 10% off. It works I've done it.

They do a 'denon' at 129.95 dont know if they are any good either.

Always worth a look at the ex-display stuff at your nearest one online and giving them a ring. I always blag a free mug too and umbrella if its raining, I'm embarrassingly cheeky though (my step son will forever be embarrassed when we bought his tv, think we got 3 mugs that day). Always ring though as they don't always have stock and can put stuff aside for you or order it in. Especially if its a journey. Good thing about Richer Sounds is they have quite a bit of leeway on price you just gotta have cheek.

I look at the needles on those crossleys and even my own ion (for usb ripping) and they look like nails.

I think a good second hand turntable is the best solution. Gumtree is a good place to look - I scored a nice old Technics amp (c.90's) for fifty quid at the weekend from a guy just a couple of miles up the road. Mind you, I have noticed that old turntables are not as cheap as you might think, esp. since the 'vinyl is back' idea became common currency.

The upside of this is that there seems to be a good number of electrical specialists who now repair, refurbish and sell these on - obviously they're not rock bottom prices but they are usually more reliable kit and easy to buy spares for should you need them - I recently bought a fully refurbished 80's Technics turntable for £95, but that did include courier fees from Blackburn and it was in great condition and very well packed too. Look on eBay and Gumtree, but don't be in too much of a hurry is my advice - choose carefully (look at some reviews) and make sure you read all the blurbs in detail and you should be OK.

...whoops, sorry ..back again...forgot to mention, I had a guy who sells a lot of Crosley Cruisers demonstrate one for me in his shop recently - my verdict? - sounds bloody awful, even through an external amp. And pray tell Paul...what is this newfangled 'soundbar' of which you speak? You can put a deck through one? Really?

Bit off topic but have you noticed recently that when you go on Gumtree in the address bar it now starts with "ebay inc" so they've obviously bought them out , wonder how long before they start charging you for listing on Gumtree ...

I thought a soundbar was a decent pub!
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

I see a plan evolving. When you've worn out the grooves on all your records by playing them on your Crosley, you need to replace them with new presses from Crosley...

soundbar is the surround sound speaker bar in front of my tv.
as I was thinking of putting the record player on the same unit, I thought It would be a good idea to plug into that.

though all this is starting to be expensive, so I might stick with the soundburger
