  • Wrong Sleeve Right Record

We've probably all come across a rare or at least desperately desirable LP in a boot sale or charity shop only to look inside (or worse still get home and look inside) only to discover the sleeve contains a Harry Secombe record.

In fact for me it's always a Harry Secombe record. I wonder if it's part of some kind of religious recruitment exercise.

    Anyway, as usual I digress.

What I was wondering - has it ever happened the other way around?

To be fair I'm not expecting you're looking inside Harry Secombe records to check you've got the right LP, but have you ever pulled a record and had the joy of finding a much better record inside?

    I'd like to know.

Not exactly (though I probably have at some point) But a couple of years ago I found Ali Farka Toure 'Red' album in Vinyl Tap for a few quid. However it had the Ali Farke Toure 'Green' album in the sleeve. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I'm in Vinyl Tap again ,and yes you guessed it there is the 'Green' album with the 'Red' record in the sleeve. Both in top shape for less than a tenner all in. Happy days.

I found a Can - Monster Movie with another record in, can't remember what. That was a depressing minute until I found the inner sleeve with the correct record at the back of the box. Glad it was in the same box and not the adjacent one being raided by someone else...

"This is Modpowerpopsouljunkierock´n´roll so stop post shit like Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Grace Jones , Led Zeppelin and some other boring blues stuff, that kind of music don´t belong in this group, if I´ll ever see shit like that posted in this group again that person will be banned from this group forever!!!!"

I was strolling through town earlier when I was approached by a shadowy figure who introduced himself as a member of a group calling themselves 'The Highway'.

He said he understood that I had been posting on messageboards about Harry Secombe records secreted in the sleeves of much better records in charity shops.

He warned me in no uncertain terms that there would be dire consequences if I were to reveal my knowledge of how 'The Highway' had broken away from traditional approaches of spreading the Lord's Word.

He said their secret mission to replace the vinyl in every tattered sleeve of "With The Beatles" or the Rolling Stones' "Aftermath" with a copy of "Secombe Sings" was the engine behind the rise in Christianity of charity shop frequenting Mojo readers across the nation.

If you don't hear from me on the finds thread in the next day or so you'll know that they've found me...

        ...and they've got me.

Can't say this has ever happened to me, but there have certainly been occasions when I've found good records without sleeves - and now of course they get lost in my collection as one white inner sleeve looks pretty much like any other. If I'd been thinking straight, what I should have done was put them in a Harry Secombe sleeve before purchase and then if I ever encountered a Harry Secombe sleeve whilst trawling the shelves I'd know there was something good in there as there's no way I'd ever own an actual Harry Secombe album.

This would also protect me from the mysterious 'Highway' mafia since it would free up more Harry Secombe albums for them to place in the sleeves of "With The Beatles" or the Rolling Stones' "Aftermath"....thanks Skip....

Having got this Commander Cody album home, I found that it actually contained these Can single-sided white labels...

I found a mutilated version of 'Hot Rats' where someone had glued the front of a 'Beefheart' album on the front and indeed it contained said album, 'Clear Spot' I think. Got to ask why they did it but they did.

Mention of 'Highway' reminds me I have school again in the morning... Wait a minute I'm 40, thank fuck for that.

I have a vague recollection of finding a "How To Advertise Carpets" album which I was toying with buying, and inside was a copy of "All You Need Is Keith Mansfield".

And recently I found a BBC single of the theme from "Shoestring" and thought the flipside sounded vaguely Radiophonic-related. Checked the condition to find a private press punk single. So, yes, it does happen on occasion...

I once found a copy of Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs Robinson" EP and was surprised to find that the disc inside the sleeve was Darrow Fletcher's "The Pain Gets A Little Deeper" on London. Result!

Last month I picked up a 70s jazz compilation Lp at a house clearance place, and it had a copy of Axis Bold as Love inside! Looks like a resissue though can't complain for a euro.

I still have no idea if the ungoogleable O BAFO VEM DIFERENTE is any good or not. Live samba records don´t usually do it for me but you never know. .

Still, I was happy with DUMBO.

I could stand the sight of worms
