  • Discogs nightmare

My mate had a real piece of bad luck via discogs. Bought a Misfits orig record and when he received it, it was a bootleg. The long and short of it is that the seller after it being returned is claiming my friend had kept his orig and sent a bootleg back. The seller is apparently getting the police involved now and paypal wont get involved because of this even after opening the dispute. Never heard things go so wrong before!

That is pretty bad - hope it turns out OK but I can't believe the boys in blue would bother their arses over such a thing?

I once sold a sealed LP to someone who wrote back to say it was scratched and damaged - I asked them to send it back and I would refund them - the record they returned to me was so obviously not the one I had sent them, it looked like it had been stored in a ditch under a hedge for a few months. I found the entire episode really, really funny as it was so blatant and told the buyer as much, we agreed that he would be keeping the LP he actually received and no refunding would be happening.

Do you know what the seller's history is like?

He only has 25 ratings 100% but lots of unofficial boots on for sell! My mate is going to take it further with this seller who is from France. My mate is a serious punk collector and this record was 250 euros. The seller seems to have made quite a few mistakes in their email exchanges too regarding his knowledge of an original issue. Maybe he is hoping the police threat will scare my mate off( as it has with paypal) but that is not going to work!

I had a bootleg sent to me once of a german repress of the Julian Treatment lp. Managed to get the refund sorted quickly as I think the seller made a mistake. I always ask for photos with every purchase these days!

I dont see how its going to work if he's selling so many bootlegs surely getting the police involved would be counter productive. You'd be much better threatning to report his dodgy dealing to trading standards they have the ability to seize his stock.

There's a guy on ebay who sells bootlegged stuff but he sells properly licensed reissues as well. Its a nightmare trying to figure out what's a proper release. Anyway it certainly doesn't make me want to ring the police. Ebays policy is bootlegs of handbags, gladrags or anything should be destroyed.

Had a guy go mental at me on Ebay once because I apparently sold him a fake Burberry coat (don't ask I got lumbered with loads of the bloody things.) He started harping on about the police and how he'd been into the official shop in London. I just told him to wear the damm thing and get fucked in not so many words, heard nothing back after that. I don't know whether the coats were fake or not by the way, they seemed legit enough to me.

That's awkward. Why would PayPal just drop out like that? Isn't that their job description?

I see he hasn't even tried to respond to the negative. Not that this is helpful to your mate now, but the amount of boots he obviously is selling and relatively low number of feedback should raise a red flag.
What can you do? He reported it to the police, they shrug their shoulders and write off the case due to "insufficient investigation details". But he has a report that he can wave at PayPal. Your mate could report the fraud to the police in UK and send his own report to PayPal. Will it help? I don't know, you'd think they would be reluctant to meddle where both sides reported to police. Does your mate have anything to back up his case?
