  • Dedication's what you need

Not Roy Castle related (sorry) but I always like reading the dedications and thanks on the back of records, the longer and more free ranging the better. Usually pretty mundane and occasionally intriguing but it's the odd little insights that I like. Different genres tend to have their own styles but in very rough descending order, I reckon of the most common dedications and shout outs are:

    1. God above, Jesus Christ almighty
    2. beautiful family
3.= beautiful wife or girlfriend (long-suffering / guilt related)
3.= new partner (relationship bolstering/compliment related)
    4. the recently deceased relative
    5. the recently deceased music icon
    6. childhood friend/dealer/studio hanger-on/local heavy with one word name (Zoogaman!!!)
    7. the cosmos
    8. the fans, man.
    9. the cryptic message ('T.R.D.K.S - thank you for the magic')
    10. a local restaurant and /or clothes shop
    11. dogs
    12. the downtrodden and oppressed of the world. All of them.

Today's dedication is by Joe Smooth, from the Promised Land LP I had on earlier. He's missed a couple of basic steps but I like his overall sense of priorities:

"This album is dedicated to God, and to Jesus Christ in the name of our Lord, my mother, my family, my friends, my dog Sammy (who passed away), the oppressed people of South Africa, and positivity."

I reckon there's at least three coke dealers on this one

Also contains the line "Farewell to her beautiful embroidered panties".

I picked some late eighties one up today and it stuck the mind because it said simply 'This is dedicated to anyone who wants to listen to it' on the back . I passed as they looked like 'Prefab Sprout' not that I have anything against 'Prefab Sprout' in fact I've always quite liked them.

It's often the case that the more mediocre the artist, the more ridiculous the dedications. Will try and find a few gems.
"THIS IS A FINE TAPE AND BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF YESTERYEAR WHEN THE MUSIC WORLD WAS GOOD AND NOT FOULED UP BY THE LONG HAIR SCURVES WHO JUST BEAT WILDLY ON ANYTHING AND COME UP WITH A LOT OF STUPID NOISE THat only damnfools and liars say they like it"

Isnt there a Krishna related record that prominently thanks Dylan, Hendrix and the like almost making it look like they were credited to the record?
Terrible looking cover. Buried deep in the outpile...

Mediocre artists and first albums usually have the best material. Superstars don't thank anyone they aren't professionally obligated to. The bigger the artist the fewer the thanks to mere earthlings and the more nods to The Creator for Blessing them with the Gift. Shakey theories for dayzzz...

The 'Night and Daydream' and 'Golden Avatar' ones also, apparently Krishna's used to sell them in the street.
