Not Roy Castle related (sorry) but I always like reading the dedications and thanks on the back of records, the longer and more free ranging the better. Usually pretty mundane and occasionally intriguing but it's the odd little insights that I like. Different genres tend to have their own styles but in very rough descending order, I reckon of the most common dedications and shout outs are:
1. God above, Jesus Christ almighty
2. beautiful family
3.= beautiful wife or girlfriend (long-suffering / guilt related)
3.= new partner (relationship bolstering/compliment related)
4. the recently deceased relative
5. the recently deceased music icon
6. childhood friend/dealer/studio hanger-on/local heavy with one word name (Zoogaman!!!)
7. the cosmos
8. the fans, man.
9. the cryptic message ('T.R.D.K.S - thank you for the magic')
10. a local restaurant and /or clothes shop
11. dogs
12. the downtrodden and oppressed of the world. All of them.
Today's dedication is by Joe Smooth, from the Promised Land LP I had on earlier. He's missed a couple of basic steps but I like his overall sense of priorities:
"This album is dedicated to God, and to Jesus Christ in the name of our Lord, my mother, my family, my friends, my dog Sammy (who passed away), the oppressed people of South Africa, and positivity."
