I'm sorting out the PA and music for a Wedding do for friends in a few weeks time. Its just going to be a collection of songs in one folder and played on shuffle as I'm no DJ but it worked well at my wedding. That time I just threw a load of soul/funk comps, dance tracks etc into a folder and it all worked out rather well, got compliments for weeks.

Anyway I'm under strict instructions this time for some of the music, kind of eighties vibe for that stuff various bands most none too bad really but I'm pretty much left to my own devices for the rest. I was told nothing self-indulgent then told I must play Pink Floyd post Syd, so no irony there. Anyway I think 'Money' and whatever else I can find that's not depressing as hell under 10 minutes should cover that. Not that I was going to go down a jazz, prog route anyway and I don't consider any of that self indulgent anyway, grrrr, so they will get 'Gigolo Aunt' slipped in there for that .

Anyway my question is anyone got any ideas for any great psyche/soul/funk dance floor fillers, bangers that aint too obviously whacked out I can slip in, all suggestions welcome, building up quite a list but some of you peeps have first hand knowledge of the dancefloor so any suggestions welcome as long as its not too long.

Oh the age range will be from 0 - 80 but mostly 25-40 odd I would say.

Don't worry mate the cheese is well and truly catered for and I have access to enough tuneage to make it a varied mix of what they want, what everyone knows, some more obscure funk soul etc. Just wondered if anyone had any leftfield suggestions that might catch my ear.

Maybe I should play the whole of 'Here My Dear' by Marvin Gaye I'm sure that will go down well!

I played Band Of Gold by Freda Payne at a wedding once. Hadn't thought it through. Anyway, here's my choice:

            Ha, Cheers Skip.

Before the main event, I have to play military related brass band music, cant say I'm relishing that, choosing it and listening to it.

When I'm trying to jump between mainstream and more eclectic, I usually go down the (admittedly heavily-mined seam) of funk/soul originals that got sampled by the big commercial names - basically anything Norman Cook or Dr Dre has used.

So no surprise, but stuff like Just Brothers - Slice Tomatoes or Joe Cocker - Woman To Woman can do the trick.

Cheers Sam not thought of that Joe Cocker track, its in! Thing is I'm told to get mainly eighties and a bit of Modern Indie but I know as when half the party is pissed they want 70's disco and tunes all the way! I'm trying to find a nice balance then letting 'Shuffle' work it's Karma.

If they said just do whatever you want I'd be laughing. Instead I'm having to listen to eighties school disco comps and Brass bands.

You've given me an idea though Babycart I have that drum and bass mash up of the Dads Army theme somewhere.

                          Dare me:

Oh Cheers Brad I'll check some out.

You can make it 80s and still keep it classy. All the great shoulderpad soul! How about a little Skipworth & Turner?

You're absolutely right, though - in all my experience of DJing, requests made ahead of the night are quickly forgotten, particularly at weddings.

I like that rinse of Dads Army a lot.

Here's one that might tempt both the military march and the 80s soul wedding guests
