  • Your opinion please: Terry Reid - River LP

Next up, Terry Reid - River

I have to admit, I've never heard a single song by this geezer ... apparently turned down the job to be Led Zep's singer and recommended Robert Plant ... I'm getting intrigued ...

How much should I splash on this?

If Reid sang the telephone directory, I'd buy it. I'd highly recommend watching the clips of him at Glastonbury 1971 where him and a girl vocalist (Linda Lewis?) tear it up too.

      An album of two sides...

Side A: sweaty jam-band rock'n'roll with histrionic vocals and very little in the way of songwriting.

Side B: haunting acoustic folk ballads of shimmering beauty and lasting appeal.

He's easily in my list of 10 ten UK vocalists - up there with Marriott, Winwood et al in the pipes department. Still cutting it now live as well.

He's got a lightness of touch as well though, River is more subtle than you'd maybe expect - some nice bossa flavours tucked away on there, with Willie Bobo on congas. As for how much you should pay...well the going rate is around £20-30, but you can often find it for cheaper in the real world stuffed away in the '70s Rock' section for a tenner.

This is 'Dean' from the album, from Glastonbury '71:

His next album 'Seed Of Memory' is just as good.

          This is majestic....

Its a great album (although I like his Seed of Memory album more) The Light in the attic reissue with a host of gooddies is a better bet.... but an Og of River shouldn't cost you more than £20.

I really like 'Bang Bang you're Terry Reid' - US only I think?

Jump in with both feet Turbo, I don't actually own River, but am familiar with it from friends copies over the years. As far as "rock" vocalists go, I'll stick my neck out and say Terry Reid and Marriott are top of the list for me. I have Bang Bang on Epic, which is worth a listen too.
Dean at Glastonbury is one of my favourite Youtube clips full stop. It is Linda lewis, and David Lindley too on slide, with Alan White of Yes fame and Lee Miles who played with Ike & Tina Turner on bass. Everyone knows of David Lindleys' tremendous work with Kaleidoscope, the fact he sought out Terry Reid to work with for his next project speaks volumes to me.
Better pick myself a copy up now I'd pay £20 for a nice og if I came across it.

His reputation has been going up and up in the last decade. Justifiably so.

Don't fret. I'm too stingy to bid very high.

Nobody else was interested so I got it for about 7 quid with about another 2 quid for postage.

The other LP I bid on, MILTON MARSH / MONISM, went for about 40 quid ...

I'm looking forward to hearing the Terry Reid LP ...

                          Thanks folks!
