  • Gilli Smyth RIP

Posted on the Gong website on the 23rd of August

"Gilli died at mid-day in Australia surrounded by loved ones. She had been admitted to Byron Bay hospital with pneumonia a couple of days ago. She was 83 and also ageless.

Her unique stage presence and vocals manifested and determinedly represented a vital, deeply fundamental feminine principle within the Gong universe. She last performed with the band in 2012.

The two images of Gilli that spring to mind when I think of her are reading a newspaper, feet up on a tour bus, in our kitchen, in 100s of dressing rooms - she was never without a newspaper whatever country we were in, or laughing - a little Gilli semi-supressed chuckle at the absurdity of pretty much everything.

We will miss her. Love to the Good Witch and all who feel her loss."

I remember watching her solo as 'Mother Gong' in a pub. People were walking past drawn by the strange noises and lights being emitted, she'd smile as they gawped in though the window. She stood in front of a projector which one second would show a gorilla, a babies head, a clitoris all morphing into one another all very trippy strange, uplifting and disturbing at the same time. A true one off experience from a true one off, very sad. :

Three cheers for Gilli Smyth. Equally as crazy (in a good way) as Bert Camembert himself. I fully bought into the Radio Gnome trilogy as an impressionable yoof (must have been the dwugs! What am I beating about the bush for? Gong was fantastic for tripping out to and we loved it). Her "space whisper was as integral to the sound as the glissando guitars, flipped out drumming, crystal machine keyboards and Bloomdidos' sax.
I like the early, anarchic stuff best of all though.
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

Awesome why have I never seen that vid? Cheers TB. Yep it always amazes me there are no synths on 'Camembert Electrique' and its one of the spaciest albums ever made. The outtakes CD from that period 'Camembert Eclectique' gives a good insight into that period they were truly off their nut at the time. Yep I bought into it all but its the musical inventiveness, the positivity, absurdity and all round good vibes that have stayed with me for life.

Been feeling down for a couple of days like I kind of knew, weird. Anyway bless her cotton socks one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet who could bend your brain backwards with a few words.

        RIP Gilli.
I was only listening to 'camembert' a couple of months back and remembering why I loved that record!

Going to have to dig out my Gong collection as its well overdue for a spin. Great vibes.
