  • Brexit causes vinyl price rise

just been informed that because of Brexit, vinyl has raised in price to press from September the 1st.
    brexit hasn't even happened yet.

so expect records to cost more, and expect a lot of smaller companies struggling

That is the worst excuse for a price hike ever.

Not if the plants are in Europe, the pound fallen 8-10% against Euro since the referendum. Even if not, the vinyl pellets and other bits have to be bought from somewhere. Fallen 10% against the US Dollar too.

I agree its screwed the exchange rate and that doesn't look set to return to what it was anytime soon.

I'd get your orders in before they invoke Article 50 in the new year like they said they would.

when that happens (if that happens) the pound will reach parity with informal currencies such as the button, the chip and the peanut.

While the exchange rate isn't great, it's not so bad for recent times. Sitting at €1.18 to the £ today, pretty close to it's lowest point since the Brexit vote, it's only consistently been above that since early/mid 2014 and was below it for the 5 years prior to that.

The bright side is that apparently there'll be a review in December. Not ideal for small labels that are concentrating on records though.

I agree. I think a lot of people remember the years when you could get €1.60 for a quid, though, and still assume that's the "right" rate.

Don't worry mate, I was pretty down when I wrote that, yep its affected the dollar, and the Euro a bit but it seems to bounce about all over the place every time I look. No one knows what's going to happen in the long run, you know all things considered it could have been a lot worse but seems to be pretty steady at the moment.

I do miss the days when of 55p or so a dollar but those are long gone now!

Haven't bought a record from the US for ages. As well as the poor exchange rate they also have, pretty much, the highest postage costs in the world now typically £15 or more to post an LP. Bloody ridiculous.

Its crazy when you factor in the customs charges and 'handling charge' too should it get held up. I generally stick to buying from the EU now record wise.

My stepson is a size 13 and the only place we could find good quality trainers at a reasonable price that would last and he would wear in that size was from the US. We bought him a pair last Christmas and ended up getting stung by the customs holding company which resulted in me having a long twitter exchange with them about how their website looks like a scam as do their letters. If I hadn't remembered we had ordered the trainers from the US I would have thrown the letter away. I think the postage pushed them over the limit but as it was all factored into one fee we got screwed. Their 'hey look expensive pair of trainers here!' packaging did not help either. Its madness I tell thee!
