  • Skits?

anyone know why rap albums have skits?
    where did it start?

I like some, but recently I re listened to De La Soul is dead with the skits removed and its a really good album.
I remember hating it when it came out, mainly because of the skits, and I had it on cassette so had to listen to them all.

This kinda reminded me of a thread started recently over at DWG about your favorite bonus beats on rap records.

But as for skits, I think they can highlight an overall story/concept of an album together pretty well, if its done right (off the top of the head I can think of Masta Ace - Disposable Arts or Prince Paul - A Prince Among Thieves ), that is if we are talking about vocal skits. Cant recall the ones on De La Soul is Dead right now, but I wanted to relisten to all the De La albums anyway after watching the documentary on them (highly recommendable--> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i346sS-_8Q )

It's because you always think you're absolutely hilarious when you're really high.

some are fine, but then 20+ years later when you are still listening to someone take a piss at the beginning of a snoop dog song, its gets a bit annoying.

is it really that much outside of Prince Paul productions? Loads of answering machine cameos though.

An article on this point exactly: http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.34587/ti...e-hip-hop-skit

As it was (mostly) played on cassette, everyone had to listen to them, so they became hip hop culture reference points.

Most of my hiphop was taped from friends, and I always tried to miss out the unfunny skits, if the CD track markings allowed it.

The CD of De La Soul Is Dead has like 10 more songs than the vinyl. The music industry really [email protected] on their customers in the early 90s.

Now vinyl is back they should give all the extrs tracks put for free HA!
