I could do with a portable - how likely is that to chew my records to shreds?

Lidl and Aldi are supposedly doing decks for Christmas.

It's getting like monkeys with typewriters. Sooner or later someone might make a decent one by chance?

Same player is £50 at Amazon - who also have a slew of very similar looking 'suitcase' style players from £40 up.

I'd have thought any of these was fairly safe for a few spins but I wouldn't want to trust it with more than that.

My eldest lad has requested a compact suitcase type deck for Christmas, so I'm researching what's out there at the moment. Most 'recommended' I've come across in the £50-100 bracket are the Crosley models, though to be honest they all look similar with similar functions.

I seem to remember Elektronik (- VG+'s hi-if expert) not thinking too highly of Crosley's portables. There have been threads on the topic of portables here before, if you want search around for them.

To be fair any of those suitcase portables will be trash. Think of the old 80's mini systems and the horrid plastic decks they used to put in those, they are pretty much the same. The suitcase is a selling point as it looks 'cool'. I wouldn't recommend any but if you stick with a branded one and don't pay too much money for one I don't think it will eat records as everything tracks really lightly these days. The name 'Crossley' too puts you in mind of old style British manufacturing, sophistication and quality when in reality its all made in China.

These look OK and you can get 10% off if you sign up for the newsletter I think, well you used to print out a voucher and take it in store. Built in phono stage so can be plugged into an amp without a phono pre amp and/or just plug it in via USB and have your computer connected to an amp and it also has built in 'speakers'. Don't know how they compare to a Crossley most probably the same. I have an ION for ripping purposes and the difference between that and my own deck is night and day.

I forget as a youngster I was spoiled with all the high end audio equipment I could pick up for peanuts second hand when I first got into playing records.

They have the same deck but with an "Akai " label on it for 39.99 at 'the range' looks exactly the same as the bush or crossley ;-)

They're all crap aren't they, but best not to get too precious about it. It may lead people to invest in a better deck. The best tip for these decks, which was something Elektiktronik mentioned a while back, is that they all seem to use the same stylus which has either a rigid plastic cantilever or a slightly more bouncy metal cantilever. If you find you have the plastic one go on Ebay and get a replacement metal one. That will be slightly kinder to the grooves.

Same old shit rebadged product popping up everywhere. There's even a Dilla edition at a piss-take price. Doubt he'd put his name behind it if he was still here.

The Dilla thing looks awful and is awful. They should be ashamed of themselves really.

Doesn't his mother control his estate now and have legal rights over all his tapes, name etc or was their some huge legal thing through lack of a will or something. I remember reading a lot about it but completely forgotten. If it's a shameless cash-in by some nefarious business types shame on them!

Back slightly on topic I saw a load of cheap 'TDK' decks on ebay for like 30 quid which looked very swish by the stock images not suitcases but styled to look a bit high end. I thought 'TDK' don't make record decks and then discover it had been Argos selling them and they were probably customer returns bought at auction don't think they were pricey to begin with. There is so much crap about, your safest and cheapest bet is a bottom of the range Rega or Pro-ject I suppose if buying new.

I remember when they started recycling old hi-fi names like 'Cambridge Audio' and 'Jamo' with Richer sounds then low end products such as DVD players and TV's supposedly manufactured by 'Wharefedale'.

Less messing about, plug in the usb, fire up 'Audacity' and off you go. I've ripped pushing on 100 albums in the last month but I'd never play a new or expensive record on it I'd just find a rip of it somewhere quite easily. I can EQ things in my DAW of choice so its not an issue and its all good sample fodder for future musical projects.
