  • New record shop in Hitchin, Hertfordshire

There's a new shop opened a few months ago called Gatefold Record Lounge

    http://www.gatefoldmusic.com

It's pretty good. Got second hand stuff, reissues and new stuff.

Lots of soul, hip-hop, psych, prog, electronic stuff and rock.

They also serve booze and coffee

      Nah I'm not

I live right next to it and just thought I'd point it out.

Pretty good living next to a record shop expensive though lol

            That's Sie Vultures manor!

Lucky he doesn't read his own site anymore so he's probably oblivious to the shops presence

That and him being too busy hoovering up records in every country except the UK
it's OK to head out for wonderful, but on your way to wonderful, you're gonna have to pass through all right. When you get to all right,
take a good look around and get used to it, because that may be as far as you're gonna go.

Sounds like I should be visiting Hitchin next time I have a Friday off! (Nearby David's in Letchworth is always a pleasant dig, too.)

David's isn't too bad. I found an original pressing of Incredible Bong Band for 50p in their bargain bins before

Never had anything as lucky since though

                      Well this is a first:
                      https://www.gofundme.com/the-future-of-gatefold

If this works I'm going to start a Gofundme page to finance buying the bigger house my other half moans that we need due to the size of my collection.

                      £5
Gets you a mystery USED record (from my 'charity shop punts gone wrong' pile)

                      £10
Gets you a mystery USED record (from my 'is it worth listing this on Discogs in this condition' pile)

                      £50
Gets you a bespoke curated tour of the many car boot sales in my area, complete with my sage advice on what James Last albums to look out for, how to keep other record ghouls away from your crate with my patented 'sharp elbows' digging technique and which burger van won't give you food poisoning.

You cynical buggers. I've never set foot in Hitchin or, indeed, Hertfordshire in my life and couldn't point to either on a map, but best of luck to them.

I tell a lie. I once went to a wedding in St Albans and got lost in suburbia on the Sunday morning after when I nipped out to buy fags and forgot which house I was staying in. It was terrifying. Loads of blokes in jumpers washing cars, trimming hedges and regarding me with suspicion. I was eventually rescued in a pub.

Guilty as charged on the cynic front! I take my hat off to anyone who opens their own business, but I can't see how this adds up. Either the business isn't a going concern, in which case the 10k cash injection is delaying the inevitable, or it is and in that case why ask for the money? They've got stock and fixtures and fittings from the current location and are only moving 4 doors down - they don't even have to hire a transit. If they've knocked the drinks on the head they could probably raise a few quid themselves by flogging the coffee maker.

Davids Music has been in nearby Letchworth for 50+ years. I don't see them asking their customers to bail them out. OK they probably own the building, but I'd have thought the Gatefold owners would have factored in all foreseeable overheads like rates in their initial business plan.

I know this all seems a bit harsh and they seem like very nice people with the best of intentions, but opening a shop selling a lot of new records (which we all know provide shit all margin to the retailer) - many of which by their own admission are 'niche' or 'specialist' genres - in a small Hertfordshire market town strikes me as a bit of an unwise vanity project.
