I suppose they need to have a glued seam at the top to maintain the integrity of the squared off spine which might easily begin to tear at the top, when heavy LPs are put in and taken out. The spine would probably flatten more easily too, and then you wouldn't be able to read it easily. 7" singles don't have a squared spine and are also lighter in weight.
Rack wear is surely a factor, though. From the old footage and photos I've seen 78s and many 45s seem to have been kept on shelves behind a counter and given to customers on request, in which case a top opening would probably have been more practical.
I seem to remember there is at least one Melodiya-pressed record with a left-handed opening in my collection - little wonder when you have so many sleeves manufactured and pre-ordered by Melodiya-owned chains of record shops regardless of any wax pressing policy!
