  • Jaki Liebezeit RIP

This deserves its own thread surely? Not even a month into the new year and an absolute bombshell. Saw him a number of times and every time I was left wondering how he did what he did. The drive and the heartbeat of a very special band. I know people here will be touched by his passing.

Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

One of my musical heroes a true innovator which is rare for a drummer. When you think of all the bands directly influenced by him it's mind blowing and he kept on experimenting an awesome drummer who ploughed his own furrow. Everyone has their favourite 'Can' album and I think 'Future Days' is one of the best albums ever made. Truly saddened and Paul is right deserves a thread of his own. RIP Jaki

Very sad news. The heart of Can.

It was a drummer who lent me my first 'Can' album which may have been any of the 'Damo' albums but I'm pretty sure it was 'Future Days'. There had been a mouldy old tape of 'Soon Over Babaluma' that had done the rounds a few years prior though. Anyway we both used to lend each other CD's and I still remember him saying 'Youv'e got to hear this the drumming on it is mad, it sounds so simple but it's not I don't how he's doing it!'. My first introduction to 'Can' around the mid 90's, pre internet and despite knowing a little about their reputation and influence left thinking 'What is Going on?'

I remember thinking of the dance/electronic music of the time and thinking's these guys have already done this.

Hands down Can were the most important force in my and most of my friends musical influences. Fundamentally it was Jaki's drumming that drew me in. I loved his latest collaboration with Joachim Irmler. I never saw Can live and was thrilled when the Barbican gig was announced for April. Hope Irmin still goes ahead with it.

Outside of Can are there any Jaki recommendations?

It was a copy of tago mago from vinyl exchange back in December 2002 that started the music path I'm on now.

                  Sad to hear he's gone.
