  • RSD 2017 - SNEAK PEAK

hello. Today I got a very quick look at a leaked list of 2017 RSD releases. It was only a quick look, and I found it incredibly dull. And more importantly, outrageously expensive in terms of RRP. A good example: The Andromeda Strain OST, hexagonal vinyl, in a replica of the original complex folded sleeve etc, €90. Limited to "just" 1500 copies (that's about €67,500 gross to the record company if they sell them all). I think there's a Hawkwind LP coming with marijuana smelling sleeve. €50. The list is also full of novelty wax colours - The Dark Crystal OST, on "Crystal" clear vinyl. ie clear vinyl.

I think there's a Meters box set of singles? €90. The only vaguely interesting thing I spotted was a vinyl repress of the Archie James Cavanaugh LP.

As a record maker myself, I simply cannot believe some of the pricing. And of course, none of it is SOR. Lots of 7" singles at €20. Too, too much.

btw, I have written in Euros because the list was in Euros.

Yes, that links to the list I saw. Then I saw another one of UK based stuff. But look at those retail prices. Nilsson Schmilsson - €35. Jerry Cole, Astro Sounds, €43, Ken Boothe 7" €25, Ken Kesey The Acid Test €45, Lalo Schifrin My Life In The Movies €50 - even the flippers are going to have a hard time making a profit.

For some reason every year I hope that Ghostface Killahs Apollo Kids (Johny Thunder sample!) will finally get a release on vinyl but no the vinyl is needed for more Nillson Schmillson.

We didn't bother this year, what used to be a day of fun & interest has all become a tiresome mess.

its become pointless. I went to the first two. I haven't bothered since. I have managed to get a few things that hadn't been issued on vinyl before. I don't actually think its aimed at us though. it must be aimed at people who don't know anything about records or music

That Hawkwind sleeve sounds like the most pointless thing ever are they going to put rock burns and razor blade marks on it too? I've never been to an RSD on the day usually as it means big crowds, queues and black fridayesque fighting. I also notice a lot of shops put the latest manufactured indie bands in store these days which definitely isn't aimed at me.

That's not to say some shops don't have some good entertainment on the day just that it seems more about the 'teeny bopper shopper' (I'm having that.) and crowds of 'fandoms' turning up to buy special edition Ed Sheeran records they will probably never play.

I have picked up RSD stuff 1-4 years after it's been out when it ends up in a Juno sale for a fiver because no one wants it. I've nothing against it mind you as Paul says it's not aimed at us in the main. I have more of a problem with it clogging up pressing plants with pointless records that unless they are unreleased, out of print or specially produced for the day seem utterly pointless or just a major label money making exercise.
