• birmingham nec record fair...

yesterday, me and the wife travelled with two friends of ours to the record fair in birmingham, run by v.i.p.

did anyone else go? we had great fun there and i picked up a few nice pieces...

near-mint copy of "the hanged man" LP (at last!) on contour
francoise hardy "in english" LP
gainsbourg "l'eau a la bouche" EP 7"
france gall "n'ecoute pas les idoles" EP 7"
neon philharmonic "morning girl" 7"
hello "tell him" 7"
hello "love stealer" 7"
5th dimension "living together, growing together" LP

a little tip for everyone - invite your wives / girlfriends along to these events and ask them to haggle for you with dealers. i found that i managed to shave several pounds off the asking price of certain records this way. dealers who wouldn't budge on a price were far more polite to my wife. she got results!

i have to add though - most of the dealers there were fairly friendly and not too grumpy at all. there were a few european dealers there from france and germany and they were really helpful and friendly, often knocking off a couple of quid here and there.

one thing i noticed though - one bloke had a box of libraries on his stall, appallingly priced up for the unwary. i mean - "electric bird" on dewolfe for £50 a good album, but not £50. a "classical jingles" type kpm for £60? my heart skipped a beat for the amount "pink sauce" was going for. something's not right there.

anyway, that small niggle aside - a great day out and a nice selection of records.

I was looking forward to this fair with great trepidation and I spent most of the Friday night trying to persuade Manzo to come as well. However, come Sunday morning, the resonations of his voice of reason prevailed and I decided to wipe the sweat from my furrowed brow and return my portable to its resting place and wallet back in pocket.

I decided to go watch the Cricket Final down the Working Man's Club. After the first innings I felt I should have rather listened to my more primal vinyl instincts and go to the fair. Your post wooly has just reinforced that feeling.

First off, I'd like to apologise to you, Raj. I sure as #### didn't mean for you to not go. ####, vicarious spending is pretty much all I've got at the moment (my count in the last six months is two widescreen TVs, one and a half DVD players, and a Digibox :biggrin.

Secondly, "voice of reason": You see that, fellow Heroes? In your face! Someone appreciates me
However, I do admit that it may just be a sign that Raj is losing his mind.

Don't call it a comeback... H, N, and the number 7.
Ok, it's a bit of a comeback, I suppose...

Never fear Manzo, you may have saved me from spending an obscene amount of money on some hot Pink Sauce action!

As to the liberation of my marbles, there's nothing new there. My mental faculties have been in steady decline for some time now. (no, it's nothing to do with either!)

seriously, you could have got "pink sauce" about 75% cheaper off the dreaded 'bay!

good fair, though. if i'd have known i was going with some kind of advance warning, i would have asked to hook up with people. as it was, we didn't know we were going until saturday night.

my wallet's still cooling down. it took a slight battering.
