my first ever job was selling icecream for a small suffolk based italian firm called paravannis - you do *not* want to know about some of their production techniques!

My favourite flav is definitely liquorice! I was really reluctant to try it but was really suprised by how nice it is.

Salted liquorice ice cream is not nice though!

At the big chill they sell this organic made from milk from devonshire cows or something. The simple plain vanilla flavour is just lush.

If I was picking flavours it would be pistachio. yum!

Having been born and brought up in Musselburgh, I'm more than acquainted with slucas... even went to school with Mr. Lucas daughter Yolanda... and it is really really good Ice cream. However there is another ice cream maker from Musselburgh - Di Rollo.

Where Luca's specialises in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, Di Rollo's specialises in flavours.... many goodie's, Mint choc chip, and pistachio already mentioned, but i've gotta mention DI Rollo's Turkish delight and banana flavours...

There are many italian scots who have made a fortune selling ice cream to their adopted country folk, someone could / should probably oprganise a tour, there are some great ones in Fife, particularly in St Andrews and Cupar, the name escapes me at the moment...

i was brought up (til i was 6) in haddington
and during the long hot summers of my childhood the excitement caused by the purple Luca's ice cream vans was 'palpable'.

i went to the luca shop in edinburgh a few years back and it was even better than i remembered.

cheers for the other east scotland tips though, will keep an eye out.

there was always the temptation to over do it.

that and the fact that in the adverts they had white ice cream
                        ours was yellowish

I had a cone of amazing Pistachio ice cream at a farmer's market the other day - I'd say that was one of my favourite flavas.

Apart from that, me and the wife invested in one of those ice cream machines. I find home-made vanilla (all proper ingredients, my own recipe) can't be beaten, although my rhubarb crumble ice cream has melted hearts at dinner parties, I'm serious!

Great for doing sorbets and quick frozen yoghurt mixes as well - tried this last night: get a tub of organic yoghurt and puree a fresh mango, whack it all in the ice cream machine and off you go... nice sharp taste, but sweet at the same time.
