  • Record fair annoyance

i know this is my own fault for not checking the records but as it was a record fair and not a car boot sale i thought that the seller would at least be selling decent stuff and i wouldnt have to worry about scratches and stuff.
so i spent £20 on 5 records from the soul funk dance £4 each box. all looking new some in shrink wrap and he had 3 or 4 copies of some so i thought he had just brought some from his shop. so i hand over my money and i even put some back coz i didnt want to spend to much...
i get them back home check the condition... hmm look ok first one perfect, second one.. hmm perfect again 3rd one, bloody cracked all the way through so you can only play first 2 tracks on each side grrrr oh well was only £4 and the 4 tracks i can play are ok... 4th one ohh perfect double album so i check the other record arrrghhhh its the same bloody thing so im missing side one and got 2 side 3s... bugger.. record 4, how the bloody hell has this happened the record center sticker is over the last track on each side for f%%ks sake.. i can still play the track i bought it for but bloody hell.

well thats me annoyed so from now on im checking everything..

the rest of the fair was crap as it always is in birmingham. think ill stop going

Shrinkwrap warpage is a common one
I've had the same situation a few times at record fairs...not with shrinkwrapped stuff but with stuff priced up as mint or very good...you'd expect it to be at the very least playable....3 distorted to buggery hiss laden 7's with that chemical wipe stuff that gives a great sheen so as to disguise the marks...plus a amazingly bowled Serge LP

      All from different sellers too

I've stopped going to record fairs because generally the ones in the Leeds area are crap and i work on a Saturday so i can't go if i wanted to

Still i have had alot of great stuff over the years...especially from the cheap boxes

yeah, can sympathise - had a few things from dodgy dealers over the years. besides the usual looks mint, barely plays records, one dealer played me a great (long) track, not mentioning he'd started from a couple of minutes in to go past the huge scratch at the start of the record

a portable is really the only way. and if dealers/shops don't like people using them, they've got something to hide!

doesn't always stop the missing sides from double albums problem though, unless you are really paying attention...

there's an old guy in canada who used to re shrink all his stock......and sell it on as new sealed.....jacket would have a punch hole or ringwear and it would be sealed over the top.....used to happen a lot back in the days of cut out warehouses etc....
if you spend money with a dealer at a fair and you're not happy with the records - take them back to him at the next fair - if he's at all decent he'll sort you out....but if he's selling skimmed records he ain't gonna be at all decent! you can almost always spot a skimmed record by the sheen and sometimes marks on the run out.......

Yeppp!!!! I've had the skip over the scratch routine too....worst one was a guy played me a track which i loved and sold me the LP which i paid 30 quid for (it was a Fantastic Johnny C album) then a short while after i left the fair i took it out of it's sleeve to check the credits on one of the songs and found a massive deep scratch all across one side of the LP!!! So i had to argue with the person on the door to get let back into the fair (even though it was obvious i paid since i had one of their carrier bags) and when i confronted the guy about the scratch he says to me "Well i thought you just wanted it for that one track" Then he made we wait round ages to get my money back, while he served about three other people...all the time muttering under his breath which got me more and more wound up until i exploded with rage and called him a ******* con-merchant who gives other dealers a bad name and that he should ******* do a **** until it **** and ******* etc etc I then looked around me and heard a chorus of tutting record collectors and all i could feebly say was He sold me a scratched record God knows what they must have thought

and you were right to by the sounds of it....a lot of short sighted dealers out there.......prepared to risk the reputations for the sake of 30 odd quid.....what's the point?....never understood this...

I feel your pain, but it depends what it is. If it's a rare record for next to nothing, then buyer beware.

It was about right the right price for it...seen it for between 25 and 40 but it's a hard one to find in the flesh.....i know what you mean about finding something super cheap tho Although i once got Louie Ramirez "In the Heart of Spanish Harlem" for a fiver...superb nick too and that was from a Soul/Jazz dealer who definately knew his stuff, that's another VV tip....If a shop or dealer specialises in one thing and knows his/her stuff then you sometimes get some brilliant bargains with music they don't know....i know a certain Rock and Roll/Jump Blues/Country seller who's been going for years who sells rock records for next to nothing (mainly because he hates them...but still)
