  • nice versions of...

we're putting together a new set for our little jazzcombo (guit, rhodes/hammond, bass, drum) to earn some money during the sommer.
so, in the past we arranged the different songs by our own, but at the moment, we haven't got the time. we mostly take some real classics and play them in a more groovy 70's jazz/fusion/funk version. so i'm looking for the nicest versions of the following songs, and maybe someone who could mail them to me (or soulseek or whatever...)

    - maiden voyage
    - song for my father
    - summertime
    - desafinado
    - girl from ipanema
    - green onions
    - aquarius
    - riders on the storm
    - light my fire (guess we go for a mixture between the driscoll/auger and el chicano version unless you know something better...)

for all the other songs i found something satisfying, but those are really difficult...any help appreciated!!
    thanks

George shearing did a nice version of aquarius, theres gotta be a hell of alot o covers of this. some nice moog versions, trying to remember which are the better ones i think dick hymans is good or is it denjean, not sure

pete moore and dick hyman have both covered green onions

yonderboi did a a kind of remix of riders on the storm, but thats a new thing, would love to know if there are any other covers of it

theres an exellent version of maiden voyage on the mps comp 'between or beyond the black forest' by the third wave'

yeah thanks. we thought of the george shearing version too. i just thought that theres maybe a better version for our quartet...
unfortunately we haven't got any vocals to cover the VERY nice thrid wave version. i don't think we could manage those four voices....playing instruments at the same time with some beer in the left hand...
and riders on the storm seems to be a very difficult one to find. yes, the yonderboi one is also the only one i have in my mind right now, don't like it that much. but at least he did a cover...

i will check if i find these moore and hyman versions of green onions. never heard them both. do you have mp3s of it or something?

I have the dick hyman one as mp3 and should get around to recording my 'music for tommorrow' lp( contains the pete moore green onions cover ) from what I remember the pete moore is the better of the two. the're ok tracks but nothing really special, they were the only covers I could think of, wouldnt surprise me if better cover versions of green onions are out there somewhere.

I've heard good things about that ramsey lewis maiden voyage cover, contains some moog action am i right?

been meaning to get round to picking it up

I've always been partial to Love Sculpture's version of Summertime.
I have to say it's one of those songs I'll always listen to no matter what.
Even been known to warble it meself

Leon Thomas does a "nice" version of Song For My Father but the niceness comes from the vocals rather than the backing - can mail you an mp3 if you want.
                    Errr..Hambone?

James Last does a nice fender version of "Summertime", and Luis Carlos Vinhas does a great version of "Song For My Father" off his CBS album.

A personal fave is Billy Stewart's 'Summertime' (or John Schroeder if I'm in an instrumental mood). Nice, uptempo arrangement. But I'm not sure how it would sound without a brass section...
