  • Jesus...the break

I've made the same mistake twice and I'm hoping that eventually I will get the right one. There is a song named "Jesus" that starts out with a slow to mid tempo heavy drum break before a deep voiced man comes in and beings singing "I want Jesus to walk with me". I heard it was power and glory that did it, but now after trading away for the record...twice, I am sre this is not the right song. I know it is supposed to be a brittish relase. Somebody please let me know the score before I end up landing a triple of this LP.

... the version of this I've seen/had was on one of the cheapo "Hot Hits" series of albums.... the numbers 3 and 10 come to mind... I think one of them has a Glitter Ill Jiggy Loop and the other has the "Jesus" track, complete with opening break...

(note how this post is turning into an early-morning ramble as the brain is still starting up - sorry...)

... you know the ones, with the cheesecake (copyright Boogiejuice) cover pictures...
If you're looking for a pristine copy then this isn't the one for you. The vinyl looks like someone has polished their brickwork with it and the label has been ruined by some fool with a pen.

Well, to that list you can add the Cliff Richard version..... but a couple of questions / queries on this.

The first words on all the vocal versions that I have (or at least could find this morning) were 'Jesus, won't you come back to earth...' - so maybe the track that you're after maybe *isn't* Jesus, but another religious track ?

Also, many if not most of the breaks on the track intro - especially those that are 'faithful' to the original, will use pretty heavy phasing on the drums. Certainly the TOTP/Hot Hits and Cliff Richard versions do. That narrows down the search a little.

Thats the one, I'm looking for. I couldnt find a link to it so I could post up the sound sample. I don't think it was a US album. I think someonr Identified it as a Brittish LP
Matt the version I am thinking about starts with the Lyrics "I want Jesus to Walk with me" x2.

This sounds like it could be something off "The Cross and the Switchblade" soundtrack by Pat Boone. (see the blaxploitation site for more details)

Its probably not the thing you're after but it sounds closer than the other 'Jesus' track mentioned is 'Jesus Is Just Alright'. The version by The Byrds starts with an open break and then the first line is 'Jesus is just alright with me'. Maybe its a reworded version of that song?

talking of Jesus, anyone know if Johnny Rivers 'Jesus Was a Soul Man' is any good? Google tells me precisely nothing, and the title sounds promising.

As Col' has mentioned it, look out for the Hoctor version of this track (its the flip of 'T.S.O.P.&#39 - as it is a break filled uptempo funk winnder, if ever I heard it.

Anyway, that doesn't really help does it

Other than scaring the b'jesus out of me, that clip confirmed that the song you are after *isn't* 'Jesus', but something other than that oft covered hit.

Sheesh, I don't think that I can sleep after listening to that.....
