  • Kindly neighbour

Not had much luck on the digging front of late, so when a neighbour asked if I wanted to look through some records in his garage I didn't hold out much of a hope. "My brother ran a mobile disco", thoughts of Black Lace etc... However I'm very glad he asked me over. Scored 85 45's and a handfull of 12's & lp's. A mixture of soul [northern? not really up on this], funk & disco. Here's a few of my faves so far:

Dean Parrish - I'm On My Way   prefer b side Watch Out nice Mod feel.

    Alvin Cash - Stone Thing pts 1 & 2

Salsoul Orch - Salsoul 3001  was this released on a 12"? Good take on 2001.

The Fuller Brothers - Moaning, Groaning, and Crying / Times a Wasting

    Creative Funk - Funk Power

The Dynatones - The Fife Piper  Wow! Best of the bunch so far, wicked groovy tune from 1966. Anyone know of anything else by these?

Reggie Griffin & Technofunk - Mirda Rock 12"

20th Century Steel Band - Yellow Bird is Dead lp

    Harry Thumann - Underwater 12"

Guess I'll post some more when I've been through them, most are U.S 45's and as I've said I'm not really up on soul / funk 45's. If I get another tune as good as the Fife Piper I'll be

Oh, and I get the flight cases when they've got rid of the rest. Maybe my luck is changing.

Good haul! The Dean Parrish is one of the three before eight they used to play at the Wigan Casino (the last three records in other words). What label's the Dynatobes on? It's another old northenr record which, I think, is more collectible in its Pye International issue.

I love the Harry Thumann, too. Top bit of proto-house from 1979. It's a bit like Johnny Harris' Odyssey (another big disco favourite).

Thanks for the info Grimsby, just found another cut of the Dean Parrish on an EP which has all of the 3 before 8. The Dynatones is on Hanna Barbera so I guess its the US og?

Checked a few more today, mainly soul, some nice bits.

Aint Nothing but a Houseparty - Show Stoppers
I Made a Mistake Because it's Only You - Marva Whitney
I'll Never Forget You - Marke Jackson
What Would I Do - Bombshells / Six by Six - Floor Shakers
Bok To Bach - Fathers Angels
Just Ask Me - Lenis Guess
We Need More - Marva Whitney & Ellis Taylor
      Jingo - Candido 12"
Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me - Peter Brown 12"
      Whistle Bump - Deodato 12"

Guess I'll slowly work through them [working nights], but turning out to be a nice selection.

looks like your Black Lace fears were totally unfounded! wonder what the ex-DJ brother is going to say when he finds all his records have been given away?

This thread is starting to make me feel sick - sick with envy... I hope this isn't gonna turn into one of those "my family (usually mother) threw out my priceless record collection while I was away at Uni/travelling etc" type stories for the poor sod who's gonna come back to no records!!

Help! Everytime I post it comes up that the 'document contains no data' if I take more than 10 seconds to type anything...

                  Whats going on?

Here's the story. Said brother has stored his records in my neighbours garage since he gave up his mobile dj ing in the early 90's. Apparently he had been asked numerous times to shift them and was given a deadline. I reckon he must still have most of the tasty stuff, because I pulled 85 out of 1000's [mostly normal "mobile" stuff]. They were in cardboard sleeves with the date, info etc going right back to 1966. If he was playing out then there would have been loads more, he probally forget about the stuff I got and thought all that was left was the chaff. However, there is a middle aged black guy living in our village [got a cool Morgan Freeman type look going on]. He didn't go through them, but was given 2 crates. Perhaps that's where the missing heat went.... If so hope he dug them and didn't just sling them out !!! I did feel kinda guilty going through them, and left a fair bit of run of the mill soul / funk. But if it wasn't me it would have been the e-bayers at the booters..... I'll post a few more up as I go through them.

You scored some real goodies there.

The Alvin Cash - Stone Thing 45 on Westbound is his hardest to find and goes for some $$$ on eBay.

Marva Whitney - I Made A Mistake is a female version of From The Love Side that James Brown would have Hank Ballard record. One of my favorite JB productions.

Loads of folk say The Getaway is Alvin's best, but I reckon Stone Thing is by far his hardest tune, hands down - that's a real score there dude!

The US og of the Dynatones is on St. Clair, a Pittsburgh, PA label. I think the garage punk band the Swamp Rats also had at least one 45 on the same label.
