  • Black cabs query

Just wondering whether contributors to the compilation should be allowed to see the whole tracklisting before it comes out? I know this is über-nerdy and all that, but one of the books I was involved in had a load of playlists at the back and I found records that had previously been largely unknown suddenly appearing on dealers' lists for extortionate prices before I'd managed to nab copies of them for myself. Hoisted on my own pétard etc.

It would be supremely annoying if tracks on this suddenly started appearing on certain dealer lists and all the cheap copies got hoovered up. Or am I being a moody, curmudgeonly git?

I was thinking excatly the same LBG when I went to bid on a 45 last week, only to see you'd already bid on it !

That'll teach me for schooling people on items that I hadn't actually secured for myself first eh

I like that suggestion (but I've been struggling to find the one or two I know anyway).

Don't you mean 'Hot Woks' by Chipper?  Oh no, that's a horrible track.  In fact if anyone wants to cleanse themselves of this waste of vinyl...

Isn't the idea to keep the tracklisting secret, with only the contributors being named? (and maybe a ikddy book style blank space for you to crayon in the actual title & artist when you find it out)

So if we stick to that, not even the other contributors will know your track and vice versa, unless you already know it of course, and neither will record dealers. I myself would be more flattered than annoyed if dealers started hiking up prices for Brillo tracks! After all, I have the CD!!

The playlist will therefore appear gradually and there's nothing to stop contributors emaililng each other privately so they can buy some time to find themselves copies, just as long as you give up the goods sooner or later...

I vote keeping it secret, no exceptions, until it's all let loose on the unsuspecting public. I reckon you've got a few months yet to scrabble around for copies of each others' tracks!

PS. LDJB, I just gotta know what yours is and find one quick!

What's wrong with being a moody, curmudgeonly git? I thought we all were...

Why not just get the damn thing out, I feel like this has dragged on for months. When it finally arrives I'll either have died of boredom or expect it to be better than Bambaataa's Death Mix, Black Chains, Brainfreeze and Chocolate Soup For Diabetics all rolled into one. Err, now who's being a moody git...

Nick - not being privy to the selection process I don't know which track was chosen. Was it, perchance, the one mentioned several times in passing above and am I having the piss taken out of me in some sly southern way?

Yes LDBJ, you are indeed having the urine removed from your body in a most unatural way...!

And yes, Mr Divine, you are being a moody git, now shut up fool!

It's dragged on for us lot, it was bound to considering all the folk involved, but it'll be new to whoever finds a copy on their doormat one day...

One reason why we should try and not tell each other what's what (or at least reveal online before anyone else gets a chance) is that  it's entirely possible that when we send copies to our American and other overseas cousins of nerdom, it's quite likely that they'll merely raise an eyebrow, with maybe the exception of forward thinkers like DJ Marco & Dante, and dismiss as 'Josh' - whatever that means...

That may leave us to have all the fun. When asked about a certain track, the contributor in question can have lots of fun playing Blofield, giving criptic clues etc - But I really hope it turns out that folks abroad (girls aloud) get into the spirit and play the guessing games etc...

So dig yourselves in, it's gonna be a while yet before it's all recorded, mastered, designed, pressed and posted around. Don't get impatient, this is a labour of nerd love...

aren't ya'll curious to see if others can 'spot' em?

I tend to find that no one has ever heard or seen the few eyebrowing raising local pieces I've picked up .. although one did show up on that 'across the ditch comp', but yeah - why not be tight lipped, grapevines can run red hot

                            cheers chap!

Here's the update. There is no update!

There are some tracks that either need to be re-recorded or the records sent to either myself or Sermad to be recorded. Might as well send them to Sermad, as he'll be recording them.

If you wanna record them yourself, find the best A/D you can find, good soundcards doesn't mean good A/Ds but they'll do. Record as an Aiff file. Get as much headroom on the recording as you can but under no circumstances, touch the red, ever! Don't do any DSP on it, no normalise, no nothing. Just raw audio.

These are the tracks that need to be re-recorded:

                              Fryer's - has no-earth type buzz throughout

Si's - Did you maximise the sound to the point of oblivian Si? The wave form is insane, I think you've chopped off a fair bit.

Big D.D - yours sounded quite muffled, may need another recording

Rich - Didn't sound too great, but I think Sermad has re-recorded it.

Hadrian - Sounds very rough. Is it the recording or maybe what you used?

Matt - Yours is covered, as discused privately. I'll be handing it over to Sermad v.soon.

The rest sound okay to me.

That just leaves the running order and design to argue over, and we haven't even got near the actual cost yet!
