I used to have a weird LP from Singapore - it was called 'Pop Jawa' I recall - had a pic of a girl sat behind drums in front of flock wallpaper - early 70s I think - it was just her skiffling along & singing. 30 years before the White Stripes....

There's been this ( http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-....k.shtml ) which I haven't heard yet, but which looks extremely tempting...CD only, though, I think.

As for Turkish Psych, there was a set called 'Hava Narghile' (on Dionysos, I think) that had some good stuff on it (though sound quality is a bit variable) and another (from the same label as Steam Kodok) called '26 Turkish Delights: Ultrarareties From Beyond The Sea Of Marmara' which I've not heard. A mixed 'Asian Psychedelic Music' set covering Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, India, Turkey etc (on Normal) has the best tracks though - Erkin Koray, 3-Hur-El (from the Votel mix) & Magollar - all great.

More in the oddball pop/surf vein there's the Thrift Score 'Teen Dance Music From China & Malaysia' which is fun, but spans everything from surf guitar bands to go-go, beat & exotica...not much you'd properly call 'psych' there, though.

I'm sure there's been a recent-ish bootleg compilation of Malaysian psyche stuff, but having got my fingers burnt with an equivalent Turkish comp I decided to leave well alone. . .

I appreciate this isn't much help, but if I see the LP again I'll check the tracklisting for you.

Malaysian psych - the friday challenge

Some time ago I came a cross a picture of a pretty scary bunch of Malaysians going by the name of Pietro Atilla & the Warlocks. The picture was on the inner sleeve of some schlock piano LP from the same country.

For all I know they play covers of Mantovani, but they have a healthy interest in paisley/brocade frock coats and Attila the Hun moustaches which says maybe not.

My supposition is that as Malaysia was on the Vietnam R&R route there would be loads of bar bands churning out Creedence Clearwater Revival, Elvis and Jose Feliciano covers . Now some of these must have been a bit more wigged out than others and maybe made it to vinyl.

We all know about the Japanese (Spiders, Samurai ,blah blah blah).

So my challenge to the collected minds of VV land is - Malaysian Psych crock of gold or crock of shite?
Working...
