Wow! Are folk hibernating? It seems that the late arrival of Winter has stopped folk from getting out there and finding owt this month, or at least stopped them posting about it.

I've had a few finds / arrivals / droppage so far this month, so while there's some down-time in the office, I'll crack on with starting this month's thread.




Much love to Jay and Shere Khan for helping to rebuild my confidence in trading on the Board. Always a plus when folk send you an item in exchange for what you sent them!! Chuffed with all the items here as they're all things that I genuinely wanted, so I think all parties have ended up pleased with the trades, which is how it should be.






Top two here were from Rob's. I'm dipping my toe into the world of The The, partly through reading Johnny Marr's autobiography and partly after hearing a couple of tracks on 6Music recently. The Blood, Sweat and Brass LP has all the right players on it and Mainstream has been a decent label for me in the past, but the brass section on this is just a bit too 'bright' for me, I think I'm struggling with Treble as I get older, is that a thing? Was mega-chuffed to find QOTSA's 'Songs for the Deaf' in a local independent shop last week. Had to pay proper money, but not as proper as it could have been. Plus, I've a birthday coming up and I want to support independent shops, so I pulled the trigger. Now watch it get reissued for RSD or summat, Meh, I'm not arsed, this is one of my favourite albums ever, so it's ticked numerous boxes. And I went to market on Saturday, traded in a chunk of my CD collection (which is largely redundant now) and came home with Gospelfolk. Was very kindly offered the opportunity to take it home to listen to before deciding if I want to pay the balance off (I've not had chance to listen yet), which I'm sure I will do - by the time I go back to market, I'll be able to off-set a chunk of said balance with some more vinyl trades anyway.

Un Homme et Une Femme OST: There was some debate here recently about whether this is any good. I love it and I love the film, too.

La Salsa Dura – All killer no filler Fuentes comp of classic charangas and descargas.

Voces de la Tierra - : Castilian folk choir featuring my mother-in-law Maribel.

Jorge Mautner – Bomba de Estrellas : Quirky MPB from 1981. I’m slowly growing to like this one.




Back home, I was driving home listening to cool Estonian folk-jazz by Collage and decided to pop in to see Domingo, who mans a local drug rehab charity shop. He never has any records, not for five years, but I keep going back.

He has records. “The bloke died” he tells me. I approach the stack with my heart pounding, preparing myself for more battered Manolo Escobar/Miguel Bose disappointment.

The first record I see is by the Estonian Philharmonic Choir, then there's loads of other stuff, Melodiya generic sleeves, Swedish schlager, Frank Sinatra. I snap up up a handful and rush home to learn the Cyrillic alphabet.



Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir: Classical choral stuff. They do Poulenc. I'm not really into this.

Ljiljana Petrovic – Pretty 10” by Bulgarian singer. I quite like Ты — Случайная Встреча

Suveöö – Tuul: Looks amazing, but is a fairly dull folk album.

Leila Jarvi, Olaf Kopvillem – Lenda Lenda: Horrible cabaret stuff



Hämarik – Boy scouts and Girl guides from Tallin. Happy and clappy.

Raimonds Pauls – Latvian guy who several plussers have had run-ins with before. This isn't much good.

Estonian Song Festival: Male choirs.

Orchestra Parade : This is where I learn that Джеймс Ласт is James Last.



Uued Laulud: Estonian pop parade with Jaak Joala, Uno Loop etc. Collage provide backing on a couple of tunes, but not so's you'd notice. My favourite is Marju Kuut.

Nora Bumbiere & Viktor Lapcenoks: These two seem to pop up a lot with Raimonds. I like her voice, I hate his.

Apelsin: Soft, vaguely proggy Estonian stuff that's also well known here. Igatsus is the track.

Raimonds Pauls – Naktsputni: Discoid Latvian stuff with the clavinet-heavy Modo.



Royal Knights Vocal Ensemble: Preppy Japanese vocal group who seem to have been big across the Iron Curtain.

Sochi 68: Gathering of pop artists from Soviet satellite states. I’ve fallen in love with tragic Bulgarian Singer Pasha Hristova, and there’s some odd Mongolian stuff, too.

Latviešu Komponistu Estrādes Dziesmas – Latvian composers showcase. It’s Ok, I suppose.

Estonian Radio Light Music Orchestra: 10” Conducted by Aleksander Rjabov. Good version of Taboo here.

R.Pauls – Manal Dzimtenai: Raymonds again, with a syrupy folky thing with Nora and Victor.

Jaan Kusk: Estonian thing I can't remember anything about.

Harald Lutterus: Estonian baritone. I rather like this one.

Legajeezus – Folk ep that’s the closest thing to Collage I found. They even do the same folk tune that’s used on Kaokiri opener Mets Neiude Vahel.



Nilla – Hej Hej Nej Nej; Swedish ye-ye on blue vinyl. The Gunnar Kinch Quintet briefly get heavy on organ and guitar.

Populaarseid Estradilaule IV – This ep is my pick of the whole haul, with a great, woozy Heidy Tamme versión of Bacharach’s As Long As There’s An Apple Tree, and an excellent Baltic bossa version of Jobim’s Felicidade by N.Samohvalov.

African Heartbeat: I keep buying these, and I keep forgetting they're a bit rubbish.

Janis Sildegs ep: I think Janis is a bandleader. And this is an ep of songs by Nora B and the 4+4 Vocal Ensemble. It’s not great, but this video of one track is great.

I have learnt a lot in the last couple of weeks. I have learnt the Cyrillic alphabet and instantly enjoyed signs in Moscow scenes in a film I watched; I have learnt that not all Estonian records are cool folk-jazz, and I have learnt that you can steer fate by the music you play in the car.

This weekend I'm going back, with Ethiopian jazz playing.

Congrats on the Rjabov 10". Quite scarce now even here in Russia. You might also wanna listen to his Synthesis Lp on Melodiya featuring many a great jazz name!

it also came with a colour-it-in-yourself insert, similar to the one that came with Ringo Starr's
album Scouse The Mouse also released a year later in 1977 and on the same label too.

Best find by far at the fair for a fiver was this bizarre electronic album from the mid 70's by Mort Garson

Congrats on the Rjabov 10". Quite scarce now even here in Russia. You might also wanna listen to his Synthesis Lp on Melodiya featuring many a great jazz names!

Once I'd worked out that Rjabov arranged the Heidi Tamme ep I went back and grabbed the 10" with his name on. Sadly, Synthesis wasn't there.
Still a bit of classical there, though. A few on Melodiya and a lot on budget labels like Egmont and Fidelio.

Upon first listen all have their moments but I think Donovan's is my favourite out of the bunch.

These days are harder and harder to come by, and living where you do even bordering on a miracle I'd imagine... good to give your adrenilin flow a good boost every once in a while!

"Time is tight" looked promising on the John Scott. Decent bass, but too 'easy' overall. "Exodus" also worth a listen.

Took a punt on "Wade in the Water" by the Lush Orchestra. Discogs tells me that it is in fact a Dorsey Bros related ensemble. Hence Witw is a shade too jaunty.

Enoch Light's "French Connection" isn't bad, but not a keeper. I have yet to hear a version that I like.

Tom Jones was bought for G+F. As it happens, the main theme is an amusing exercise in faux-period jauntiness. Still heading out, though.

A quick skip through the VIPs suggests that it is jaunt free. G+F.

I saw the TV themes comp with "Magpie" by the Murgatroyd Band (Aka Spencer Davis).

Also a track called "Personal Cinema"by Les Sans Nom. Any knowledge here on this?

Was visiting all the parents and in laws today and managed to sneak out to a local Cancer Research superstore I hadn't hit in a while. In amongst the usual chud mountain I came across a right few decent looking LPs. Highlights for me were the Lochies 'Slainte Mhath' which Fuz played a couple of tracks from during my last visit to Chez Fuz. The Gael Folk on Thistle has some lovely folk tracks too and I'm looking forwards to listening to the Norman Maclean.

I haven't previously had the chance to properly listen to Pentangle so took the opportunity to pick up a couple of their earlier LPs and the Tommy Darky is an accordion LP by an artist whom I have a great 45 by which sounds a bit like drunken pirate folk music.

The LPs on Emblem will probably be bad gospel music but I am doggedly picking up every LP I find on the label to get good record karma in the hope a Gospelfolk or a Sharon's LP turns up. The club/cabaret LPs look a bit hit and miss but I can't pass up releases on labels like Moonbeam, Scotia or Star so I'll give them a shot. Lots of interesting listening ahead and the most promising big haul I've found in a single chazza for a good long while
