  • Exactly the reason I bought it mate! My friends dad was a massive 'Groundhogs' fan so I've been into them for gulp 26-27 years on and off. Think I'd have taken a punt on it either way with it being a blues band although a lot of trad jazz records use that word in their titles in a different context!

I still remembering rewinding 'Cherry Red' over and over to play again on the old 'Walkman' on me paper round, bloody hell I sound like a Hovis advert!

      • Nice find on the Stereolab 10"! That Playschool is vaguely collectable for the Bang On A Drum track.

In Dread With Little Annie, with a nice promo picture and various reviews etc

and Medaphoar's In Rhymes We Trust - mainly cos it's built on a sample from Deadly Headley's 35 Years From Alpha album

          • Nice finds, I'll buy anything On-U-Sound I see as a rule not enough for its own shelf though. Some typical HG finds there, break or no break 'Bang on a Drum' is a TOON!

I found this fully signed Psyche Rare, Ok the last bit isn't true but it is signed and recorded live from the heart of Northern Clubland by the sounds...:

            https://www.discogs.com/Dallas-Boys-...elease/6839270

On the cover they look like the Village people if they all dressed as the Red Indian.

Its a mixture of light comedy and tunes with some top hammond grooves in parts. I tell no lies.

Little research tells me they all hail from Leicester, its a sign!

              • Back in the saddle. These are from my first real vinyl foray of the year, all from last weekend.

The following are from the small 50/60s,R&R, Rockabilly slanted record fair that visits Brigstowe a few times a year. I am always digging through the handful of Soul boxes. They are mostly the same boxes and I thought I had fully mined them. But I came away with more than I expected this time. It's quite possible I had handled some of these before, but I listened to them as well this time.

All the above were nice and cheap.

The ones below weren't. I probably paid a bit over the going rate. I played the dangerous game of looking through the more expensive boxes and picked out a few to listen to out of curiosity as much as anything. These were the inevitable "impulse buys" that resulted. Great records in any event.

Willie Tomlin - Check Me Baby. "I wear my chinos tight, to keep the girls mindful. I mean check me baby". Great lyrics and a great groove, it just had to be bought.

Ray Agee - Open Up Your Heart. Only recently discovered Ray Agee. Plenty of fantastic bluesy numbers in his catalog to explore.

Lorez Alexandria - Lorez Sings Pres. Lorez was unknown to me until a few years ago. I love her voice. A reissue in tip top condition.

Fox - Tails Of Illusion. Wasn't expecting to find anything like this at this record fair. Noosha and the guys debut album. Instantly transported back to my teens. Quite a few decent tracks on here. A dreamy feel to most of the album, try For Whatever It's Worth for example. Great condition.

These from the car boot the following day:

Rambling Syd Rumpo had tears rolling down my cheeks Sunday morning. My cordwangle was left in a proper moulie afterwards.

Peter & Sophia couldn't be left behind either.

Bryan Ferry - Bride Stripped Bare. Always been a Roxy fan and have had all their albums for many years. Only ben building the Byron Ferrari's solo collection in the last couple of years. My wife is always happy when I bring one of his home.

Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby. Inexplicably I don't think I have ever owned this album before.

Why did I buy these? I think I've had Ace - Five A Side before and it's a one tracker from memory.
                And Cliff? Dunno.

Chuck Berry - Rock And Roll Music. I have hopes this 78 will clean up and play OK.

                • Don't use any cleaner that contains IPA on it if its Shellac. I'm sure you know that but you never know and it could be worth a few quid in decent condition I reckon.

                  • Anyway on to finds with this. I've picked up a few of this Israeli duo's albums and always find something of interest and they are usually dirt cheap. My 79p bought me what I didn't expect though an album that seems very Country and Western, few trad numbers and a bit of folk. I'll listen again there's something about it that has captured my interest, not a keeper I don't think by any means but I think a couple of tracks are worthy of ripping before giving back to the world:

                    • Next up this WRC record for 79 pence which is interesting as it features some great drumming, a couple of nice original compositions in 'Tempo De Brazilia' and 'Taj Mahal' but otherwise its pretty much an Ellington tribute album but featuring some lovely Stereo effects. It means it'll probably bypass the jazz shelf and join the Exotica. I wish I could find Youtube clips but they seem to have been removed.

According to discogs it has Paul Gonsalves on tenor sax

                        • I picked this lot up yesterday when I went to view a collection. Haven't yet played any of them so I don't know what they're like but the records are pristine. Don't listen to jazz really either (or know much about it) so might just trade them for something.

Anything here I should be giving a whirl?

Edit. Just played the tubby Hayes and Paul Gonsalves one due to him being mentioned in the post above. Not my cup of skad. It's too "jazzy" if that even makes sense.

                          • Yep Medlar mate should have mentioned him as his name drew me to it that and some of the writing on the back for but 79p I didn't hover over it too long. It's quite early though so pretty standard swing except for the 'Exotica' compositions. It's not bad though and has been well recorded for the time with a bit of experimentation in terms of different instruments occupying the left and right channels. The rear liner notes make reference but offer little detail as to the approach and method.

I need to give it a listen through headphones to understand how it's been done because on first listen it sounds more interesting than bass and drums on one channel voice and guitar on the other kind of thing. Seems an oddity though I'd expect it to be a reissue of something else being on WRC. More research needed. 'Jimmy' has a long discography.

                            • Yep all the' Stan Tracey' and 'Tubby Hayes' for a start but if your'e not into jazz you should get some excellent trades for them. I almost bought that 'Fontana' issue of 'Milestones' the other day but it was a bit scratched sadly as I rate it as one of his best. I couldn't value them but I expect the first one could be worth a fair few quid especially if Mint and Mono.

EDIT: I see its Stereo, still I expect its worth 3 figures, more knowledgeable people could help. Anyway Ooooof wish I found them all in one go
