        • Anyway back to some finds this came off ebay it had been graded 'good' and I noticed the shrink still on it so thought I'd take a punt as there was no mention of a grading system so I got it on lovely thin 90's vinyl for about 7 quid and its in Excellent condition so win.

Now I bought this on cassette when it came out as I was obsessed with the Pixies, 'Doolittle' in Particular and I loved it. It's still in my top 3 Pixies albums but more than that I see it as a trilogy that started with this went onto the first 'Frank Black' solo album and ended with his second (which is great despite the creepy cover). He was well ahead of his time singing about UFO's and all kinds of bizarre malarkey before the 'X Files' and 'Art Bell' got in on the act. I then kind of went off them for years checking into his solo albums now and again but getting nostalgic I suppose. I cant get with their new stuff it just seems lazy and halfhearted which is a shame but who knows it might grow on me:

          • A few more from the latin pile:

Gradually ploughing through them. I feel like my ears need re-calibrating, or maybe I need to learn Spanish. That might help.

On 2nd thoughts I'll buy a bottle of tequila. That'll do it.

This is a bona fide masterpiece which I love. But for some reason I hated it when it came out - hated the music, hated the cover, hated the fonts, hate hatey hate, pouty lip time. And for that reason I never followed up on the Frank Black solo stuff - so I really need to go and explore those albums...

                • Its funny everyone seemed to hate it when it came out but I loved it. The first Pixies album I heard was 'Bossanova' which is my least favourite of all their albums. I probably wouldn't have continued my interest if I didn't somehow get hold of a copy of 'Doolittle' then kind of worked backwards and was hooked.

I bought his first when it came out and loved and it wasn't till a few years later I got 'Teenager of the Year' (pricey on vinyl, needs a reissue) which is a really solid album. After that he did 'The Cult of Ray' which in my opinion is his worst album then he went more rootsy on following albums even playing with Steve Cropper and some top session men on one. They all have their moments but I wouldn't say any were great all the way through.

From teenager of the year, creepy cover alert:

                  • With all this Pixies love, would this a good time to show off my Doolittle carrier bag which only came with initial copies of the vinyl?

                        • Catching up with last weekend's boot sale finds.
The first real booter visit of the year for me. Only one seller had records - but he had lots, and lots, of them.
Initially I thought it could be a motherlode, but didn't turn out as good as it looked in the end. Covers were generally pristine but the condition of the vinyl inside often wasn't so good.
Loads of late 70s early 80s 12" soul/funk/jazzfunk, many promos, and loads of UK issue 7" in the same genres. I did question whether he had in fact raided my collection the previous night!

Filled a few gaps in the collection, and picked up couple of spares too.

                          The little ones:

I love the Delfonics and have lots of their singles, but I realised not their most well known two Didn't I Blow Your Mind, and Ready Or Not... . I have now.
The Johnny Nash 45s were good to get on clean JAD issues. Really like the JAD label design, ditto Sussex.

                          The big ones:

The pick of the bunch for me is definitely Atmosfear - Invasion. Superb spaced jazz funk. I have just realised I already have this track on their debut album from 1981. But it sounds great on 12". Must dig out the album now.
This is a whitel label, with ostensibly a 6 track b side. A playing copy of this was released I think but the b side of my copy plays silent throughout. Why/how was this pressed like this does anybody know?

Other highlights must be Teena Marie - Portuguese Love, and Phylis Hyman - You Know How To Love Me (a spare, but too good to leave).

I have learnt in recent years to pick up anything by Johnny Otis, whatever era.

                          The oddball:

Fat & Frantic - Last Night My Wife Hoovered My Head. I will struggle to find a title to top this one this year. The track itself is lame and already in the outpile.

Ha! I just dug out my copy of the LP. It's still housed in the plastic bag and I just found the purchase receipt dated 17th April 1989 - almost exactly 27 years ago. 5.75 from Big Tree Records in Huddersfield...
                            Drastically reduced to 72p

                            • The "Your A Star" was a white label with no clue to the artist. I was hoping it would be Aquarian Dream. But it wasn't.

Shazam drew a blank. I thought hmmm this sounds like early 80s UK boogie with a hint of jazz/funk - could be Second Image. I was right! Glad to know I still retain some knowledge!

                              • Youv'e well and truly duped me you fiend. Anyone could get some of those bags printed up did they actually exist? My first Doolittle came from the racks of the local library couple of years after it initial release I'm guessing.

Could have stumbled on a new plan to make money buy up 80's and 90's albums then print up some carrier bags to go with them then stick em up on eBay and make a big hoo ha about the bag!

Blimey Mang have you not had an urge to give it a spin in all that time?
