Thanks CM (and LDJB), I'll take one of those 45s
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
Because you've got to be one with the one and all
You've just got to be close to it all

Must be the 5th time I've been up to a local record shop and its either been closed for no apparent reason, closed for holiday and now its seemingly closed all day Tuesdays so ball cocks to him, no way to run a shop and an updated social media presence would help too. So it was off to the charity shops and for less than a fiver bought this lot:

Mary Lou Williams - My Mama Pinned a Rose on Me 1977 release on Pablo of all new compositions for the time only bass and piano but looking forward to giving it a spin:

Charlie - Fight Dirty I don't remember these but am expecting pub rock with synths, would have left but it was Minty.

Frank Barber - Swingin' Percussion Studio 2 Stereo space age pop score, bit scratched but should play alright.

Salt and Pepper OST - John Dankworth It caught my eye, Dankworth, swinging London and all that not listened but I do like Sammy's vocal number I checked out on YouTube. :

The King Singers - This Is Has their version of 'Life on Mars' someone mentioned. Not my cup of tea at all, maybe I'll have better luck with their Neil Young cover. Edit: Nope its worse at least 'Noah' has an all time classic clean drum break and a nice booklet this comp just has a picture of some blokes on it. :

don't think I've seen that Studio 2 before - please report back! name sounds familiar though, is one of the tracks on one of the samplers?

It was me that wanted "Life On Mars", I wasn't necessarily recommending it, just that there were about 8 Kings Singers LPs in the shop, and not that one, which was a bit annoying.
I quite like it - not sure what you were expecting? It's by the Kings Singers and sounds just like The Kings Singers...?
Also bear in mind I really hate David Bowie's music so I might not be the best judge on Bowie covers

Nope I wasn't expecting much it is 'The King Singers' after all, for a quid to annoy my son with its a winner! Not sure on the STS being on one of the comps from memory but I have seen it about on ebay cheaply enough. I'll let you know if its of any worth.

To be fair I like the synthy outro on Life on Mars.

Edit: The Dankworth record isn't too bad very 'Casino Royale'. The S2S I wouldn't pay more than a couple of quid for in the wild might go to 3 if it was Mint as I like these silly percussion albums, probably one to buy as part of a bulk deal or in the wild cheap if you come across it as it's pretty patchy on the whole but interesting.

The whole thing was recorded in 3 sessions and you have 2 original tracks which along with covers of 'The March of the Siamese Children' and a track called 'Jordu' are probably the best tracks. I can do without another version of 'Spanish Flea' and 'A Walk in the Black Forest'. The cover notes state he conducted it from the center a 'Circle of Sound' he calls it complete with diagram. Some top session guys 'Dennis Lopez' on congas and 3 different drummers 'Jackie Dougan', 'Bobby Orr' and 'Kenny Clare'. Instruments are 2 Xylophones, 2 sets of vibes Vibes, Tymps, Marimba, Glocks, Bongos, Drums and a bit of guitar and piano and bass and upright bass at the top left of the circle. Apparently he did some work for a french TV series and that's where the idea of the album sprang from. Far from essential but a nice little oddity if you like these exotica percussive albums.

Cheers Bongo, when I saw it I had to check whether or not I had it, I believe I have two albums called 'Re-Percussion' but not that one. I'm always interested in that kind of thing.

Usual round-up of my mixed results from my digging efforts of the last few weeks. Apologies for this being a bit of a slog – I’ve been putting in the leg-work lately, so I feel like I can force you lot to endure my travails. Bear with me.

I’d built up quite a bit of credit on my flexi, so I took the last Friday afternoon of July off and had a bit of a wander round town (Nottingham) and then into the leafy, pavement café suburbia of West Bridgford. First stop was Anarchy, where I got the Joy Division 12” (which will be donated to my mate in Hove) and the VG+ friendly soul / psych / baroque / jazz of Sweetwater. I then nipped down the road to Good Vibrations, which I haven’t been in for ages. Couldn’t find much that I’d not seen on previous visits, but got the two cheapies at the bottom of the pic. The Laurie Johnson LP (for those that haven’t already given it a try) is essentially modern classical – not my kind of thing at all. The HotVills is your typical barking French ‘beat’ covers, with harmonica as lead instrument. Crackers version of The Doors ‘Touch Me’ though. It’s not a keeper, but someone will like it.

These lot came from some charity shop action on the same afternoon. I still love Kate Bush…………………..deeply. Second B52s LP, ‘Private Idaho’ still sounds ace, think I might also get ‘Mesopotamia’ and then bail out before the B52s became that bit too pop / mainstream. The Troggs came from a chazza near my bust stop and needed a bit of work with the PVA, but is sufficiently loud and lairy to donate to a colleague at work. The Amory Kane was from Oxfam Books and Music, priced up at ‘sharp intake of breath’ level, if not ‘Ouch!’. But I’d just been paid and was feeling cavalier. Took it to the till and no-one came out to serve me for an age, could have easily fled but stuck it out until the fella came out to take my money. He then rang it up at the wrong price (giving me a 66% discount), but as I’m borderline Satanic, I kept schtum. I was in a quandary about this, but rationalised it as my purchase of Kate, B52s and Amory Kane still having benefitted Oxfam to the tune of £19. I needn’t have subjected myself to such turmoil anyway as I ended up not really liking Amory Kane! If anyone wants a go at it, let me know ASAP, or it will be down the market on Saturday.

Beta Band 12” was from Anarchy. The A-side reminded me why I liked them so much, but the B-side reminded me why I rarely listen to them these days. Unauthorised Version was picked up from Rob’s on the strength of a recommendation in the Ten VG+ LPs thread (‘Girl In A Bus Queue’ being the tune). And I got home to find a couple eBay zingers waiting for me. I haggled over the Lily and Maria as it’s not in tip-top condition, but it’s more than adequate – well thought of on the Board IIRC? And France Gall is basically my record of the year thus far. Long-time want that I got for what I regard as a good price from eBay.fr. Barely a duff track on it and the dark hands of Gainsbourg, Gorageur and Vannier leave their mucky prints all over. Je suis tres content.

The above were just a selection of the trades done with Stylesforfree – cheers for that mate. If anyone’s got a Kadriko that’s just getting in the way, let me know! Four Instants is actually a spare, so will be gifted on at some point.

Some more VG+ trading action brought me the two groovy soundtracks up top from Willy Fogg and the porno soundtrack (completing the trilogy with ‘L’Initiation’ and ‘Viens Mon Amour’) was from Mr Divine – always a pleasure, never a chore. And I found the ‘Two Gentlemen of Verona’ in Rob’s for buttons. Glad it was only buttons though as, despite it being a Galt MacDermot offering, the only redeeming feature I could find was a thumping breakbeat track, courtesy of Bernard Purdie.

So, last weekend, I decided to have a day out on our local bus service’s day travel-card. Was out from 07.00 to 18.30 and was in my first chazza before 09.00 and the last one at about 17.20. Was great to find a bunch of canon fodder after seeing it discussed in the 10 VG+ LPs thread and some of the items I got were actually of the ilk of canon fodder that you don’t turn up as easily. All the above are spares and will be in the next round of trades / freebies.

As per the previous pic. All spares, but the charity shops make money and that’s what counts.

A fellow Plusser has asked me to keep an eye out for WMS / cabaret LPs. Happy to oblige. My mistake was in daring to listen to them. I’ve learned my lesson. Jimmy Wilson in Clouds features a recommendation from no less than Frank Carson. It is NOT a cracker.

First three of these came from an antiques centre in Alfreton (I'll go where I want Sie!). The Clash 12” will be sent on down to Hove and The Smiths stays with me. Was chuffed with the Tony Kinsey big band effort, many of our usual suspect sessioners all present and correct. Some very nice library-esque jazz grooves on here (some of it does seem to be credited to Peer Int.). The final one of this quartet, ‘The Music of the Dukeries School’ is an indicator of my North Notts shopping spress. Dukeries was where my Dad went to school, tough lot over at New Ollerton (traditionally went from school to pit). Which makes it all the more interesting that this LP manages to feature a couple of nice acid folk tunes and a Wicker Man-esque recorder ensemble. NB This bird has flown.

God-awful Xian musical from a chazza, again, the only redeeming feature is a drum break. Steeplechase was from Rob’s and looks exactly like my kind of thing, but I found it to be a muddled racket – that little piggy will be going to market. Humble Pie was also from Rob’s and I’m persevering with trying to get my head round ‘what Little Stevie did next’, but I find their output really patchy. And the Peter Hall LP, just to demonstrate that I’m as easily cowed by peer pressure as the next youth! Nice to get a lovely bit of vinyl in exchange for my capitulation though!

And finally…………………………just about got around to buying Sir Igford’s last (he says) album. Ridiculously gutted that I couldn’t get to the Albert Hall gig (it was arranged for the first night I went on my holidays). Can only hope he does a farewell tour. Treated myself to a very reasonably priced copy of Structure ‘Pop Music’ from eBay.fr – if this site were actually called TresBienPlus, I reckon this would be one of the key albums. Jazz, psych, easy, dirty grooves – the lot. Love it. But not as much as I love France Gall, so this remains second best album of the year. And I picked up a spare of Johnny Scott’s ‘London Swings’ on my way home yesterday.

                      Fin.
                      Jet Boy stole my baby.

I was going to go back to the record shop today but thought no he doesn't open to 11 or later some days so I decided to do a carboot/market and some charity shops in another town. Find of the day was this for 50p in great shape for what looks to be the first press. God Bless the Sally Army:

Michael Chapman - Fully Qualified Survivor Great Album from Leed's answer to John Martyn.

The Ray Charles Singers - Young-Lovers on Broadway This is one of those mega thick gatefold command jobbies. The word 'singers' doesn't fill me with much hope but they are always interesting these things and only 50p from the Salvation Army again. EDIT: I don't think its the legend that is 'Ray Charles' but could be wrong its an 'Enoch Light' production though. The orchestration is good, takeaway the 'Percy Faith' singing and it's a keeper.

The Pogues - Rum Sodomy & the Lash Not a Pogues fan but might get me a trade or some store credit or make me a fan you never know. My only find at the carboot:

Rich Kids - Ghosts of Princes in Towers New Wave Punk by the looks on EMI another 50 find found alongside the next one:

The Shirts - The Shirts Same kind of thing as above on blue vinyl.

U.K - U.K Next to it I found a what looks like a promo for 'UK - UK' complete white sleeve with only UK printed on it and UK side 1 on one side of the inner. I checked the matrix and it led me to the late 70's Bruford led proggers.

John Addison - The Honey Pot Another 50p score, I dont think this will be as swinging as the Dankworth score I found yesterday. Not seen the movie but am assuming that be 'Rex Harrison' looking like Dracula on the cover.

Jaques Brel - Les Prenoms The Chanson king in lovely nick except for the romantic dedication writing inside the gatefold but kind of sweet I suppose:

Michael Legrand and his Orchestra - Violent Violins A super stereo release I've never heard but I bet a lot on this board have! Wonder how many people assume it says 'Violet' at first glance. Just had a listen to this side A ends with the track 'Manhattan Stroll' credited to Legrand but its 'Watermelon Man' either that or I'm going insane. Maybe the credits are just because he did the arranging, just saying as I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out what it was in my head!

Brian Hyland - In a State of Bayou Allen Toussaint production with Rhodes and Moog. From 1977 so not sure what to expect probably Yacht rock. Ah I see its that 'Brian Hyland' must have been some kind of 'comeback' album.

EDIT: Might as well add this or it will be forgotten by me. : Pedestrian - Unindian Songs Vol 1 just came in the post. A dude on discogs was selling a bunch of LP's for a pound a pop unfortunately all the others were pop punk or modern hardcore and nothing tickled my fancy so I couldn't beef up my order with another rekkid to save more but quite happy with this double LP of underground hip hop for under five nicker. :

Crikey must have posted around the same time as Ben, make sure you scroll back up folks.

Some nice looking gear there Ben. I quite liked "Hammersmith", but in the end found the guitar intrusive (IIRC). Does the Laurie Johnson deliver on the ethnic flavour that it promises? I will be looking to pounce on the Dourados if it materialises as a trade/ freebie. Collage! Structure! I passed on the Tony Kinsey a while back at the classical sale - and then it was gone.

Nice pull on the Sweetwater too, another one that's escaped my clutches. Most recently fellow E Mudder Russ pulled one right under my nose at an Edinburgh fair for £3 - ouch. Determined not to pay US postage for a copy as it will probably be more than the actual LP.

I'd be interested in the Hotvills if you're getting rid. I pulled their earlier LP from the cheapie bins in Paris some years ago. It has lots of Dutronc covers on it and is also subject to bouts of harmonica frenzy.

Thanks for the tip off on Structure too, new to me but it looks right up my street and had been added to the list.

Amidar - Violent Violins is a nice boot / charity find! I had to resort to Utrecht to get my copy.
